Joel Plaskett Life

William Joel MacDonald Plaskett (born April 18, 1975) is a Canadian rock musician and songwriter based in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

In the 1990s, he was a member of Halifax's alternative rock band Thrush Hermit.

Plaskett's songwriting often includes references to his hometown, Halifax, in a variety of genres, from blues and folk to hard rock, country, and pop.

With his band The Emergency, he has toured through North America and Europe, including Timothy Edwards, Sloan, Bill Plaskett (his father), and Kathleen Edwards.

Early life

Plaskett grew up in Lunenburg, a small town on Nova Scotia's South Shore. Bill Plaskett, his father, was also a musician, and he was a co-founder of the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival. Plaskett learned to play guitar and write songs while listening to a diverse range of music, from singer-songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Neil Young to experimental bands such as the Sex Pistols and the Pixies.

Plaskett's family immigrated to Halifax when he was twelve years old; by the next year, he had formed his first band with friends Rob Benvie and Ian McGettigan. They were called Nabisco Fonzie at first. Thrush Hermit, a foursome, were playing with Michael Catano on drums by 1992.

Joel Plaskett Career

Career

Plaskett was the lead singer and guitarist for the Halifax-based band Thrush Hermit. Cliff Gibb, a drummer, was brought to Catano in 1994, the same year the band was signed to Murderecords. Following two EPs, the band went on to debut Elektra in 1997--Sweet Homewrecker, which was produced in Memphis by producer Doug Easley. The album did not do well commercially, and they were immediately removed from the site by their mark. Before reuniting in 1999, the band would release Clayton Park, a Clayton Park album on Sonic Unyon Records.

Plaskett of Thrush Hermit, as well as members of the popular Halifax band The Euphonic, had both formed in late 1998. The band, which was based on Annie Schmidt's book The Island of Nose, was made up of Plaskett, Charles Austin and Drew Yamada on guitar, Andrew Glencross on keyboard, and Tim Stewart on bass. King Tubby, Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd, Ray's Chicken Pita, and Willie Nelson were all influentials. The band's aim was to blend traditional song structure with experiments inspired by krautrock, stoogian protoplasm, and the subtractive mixing techniques of "version" reggae. In 1999, the band's self-titled Neuseiland album was released and released.

Plaskett embarked on a solo career following Thrush Hermit and Neuseiland's dissolution. In Need of Medical Attention, his first album, In Need of Medical Attention, was based on old songs that had been published near the end of his days in Thrush Hermit. Critics loved it, but not until the debut of 2001's Down at the Khyber did Plaskett's fame gain more acclaim. Khyber was a harder-rocking album featuring Plaskett, drummer Dave Marsh, and bass player Tim Brennan. Joel Plaskett Emergency was born together by the two couples. Plaskett received a Juno Award nomination as the best new artist on the album.

Plaskett's upcoming album, Truthfully Telling, was released in 2003, the band's first all-out commercial success. It was produced by his old Thrush Hermit bandmate McGettigan and was the band's first release for MapleMusic Recordings. The album "Come On, Teacher," which became a hit in Canada, was released on the album. The album was named as the best rock album on record by the East Coast Music Award in 2009.

Plaskett's sequel to La De Da, a solo project on which he performed the majority of the instruments himself (McGettigan, on the other hand, played bass). Plaskett deliberately sought a different sound for La De Da; he preferred it more for himself than for commercial radio. The album was released in 2005 and received two East Coast Music Awards in 2006 as Male Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year for the song "Happen Now." He was also nominated for a Juno Award for songwriter of the year that year, as well as being named male artist of the year and songwriter of the year at the East Coast Music Awards.

Joel Plaskett Emergency, Inc., released Make a Little Noise, their first DVD in March 2006. It contained an EP of three songs. The single "Nowhere with You" has received the most mainstream radio airplay of any Plaskett release to date, and it has been featured in a Zellers television commercial. Make a Noise made three winners at the 2007 East Coast Music Awards: Single of the Year ("Nowhere with You") and Best Song of the Year (Joel Plaskett for "Nowhere with You"), with three others as winners (Joel Plaskett and songwriter of the year ("Nowhere with You").

Ashtray Rock, the band's upcoming album, was released in April 2007. The 2007 Polaris Music Prize's concept album about high school love and pain was on the shortlist, but Patrick Watson's album Close to Paradise took the honors. The album's single "Fashionable People" was nominated for the 8th Annual Independent Music Awards for pop/rock song of the year.

Plaskett and the Emergency performed six shows at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto over the weekend, as part of the music venue's 60th anniversary celebrations. Each night, a different album was performed in its entirety, beginning with In Need of Medical Attention on Monday and ending with Ashtray Rock on Friday night and Saturday night.

In 2008, Emergency Service Nominations were nominated for seven East Coast Music Awards, more than any other group. They received six of those awards, tied for the first time.

The album Three, which was released on March 24, 2009, will be the next solo album. It consists of three discs each consisting of nine songs for a total of 27 songs. "Through and Through and Through" was the album's first single. The three albums were selected for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize shortlist. Paul McCartney revealed that he had chosen Plaskett and the band Wintersleep as the opening acts for his concert at Halifax Common this week. At the 2010 Junos, three of the year's best alternative albums of the year were released; Plaskett was also voted for songwriter of the year.

He made the first artist to reach one million viewers on CBC Radio 3's online music streaming service in May 2011 and then unveiled an exclusive acoustic version of "Nowhere with You" on the network for the occasion. He launched EMERGENCY, false alarms, shipwrecks, castaways, fragile animals, special features, demons, and protests in June.

The band's 2012 Joel Plaskett Emergency album Scrappy Happiness was released in March. Plaskett and his band played one song a week for ten weeks, and then rereleased the songs as a whole album after the project was concluded.

In March 2015, his album The Park Avenue Sobriety Test was released. In 2017, he released the album Solidarity, a tribute to his father Bill, in a joint venture.

Plaskett's "spiritual successor" to his album Three, was released on April 17, 2020, the last day he was 44 years old. Plaskett has performed in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Memphis, Nashville, and Toronto, having collaborated with 33 other artists over four years. Each of the album's four tracks features 11 songs with their own name and theme. The first record (41: Carried Away) revolves around travel, the second collection (42: Just Passing Through) begins with a journey that is new, and the third set (43: If There's Away) addresses arrival at a personal destination.

Plaskett has embarked on a variety of projects in recent years. Steve Poltz, David Myles, Mo Kenney, Sarah Slean, and Meredith Shaw have all performed as record producers for a number of Atlantic Canadian artists, including Steve Poltz, David Myles, Mo Kenney, Sarah Slean, and Meredith Shaw. In addition, he made his television debut as a rock coach on the CBC television documentary series Rock Camp in 2004. In 2008, Plaskett and his father Bill were included in a Bravo! The Berkeley Sessions are a television concert series.

Plaskett appeared as a busker in One Week and as a guest anchor on This Hour Has 22 Minutes on March 5, 2013. A 2012 joint venture with CBC Kids resulted in the release of a music video for an alternate interpretation of Plaskett's "Fashionable People," which was recast from the original song's satirical portrait of hipsters into a song about how fun it is to dress up. Plaskett's self-explanatory, a fellow East Coast Canadian artist (Luke Boyd), appeared on his album "One Track Mind" from 2009.

Plaskett and Chris Murphy collaborated on the creation of Prize for Writing, a posthumous album by singer-songwriter Matthew Grimson that was released in 1995 but not until 2020.
