Tomoko Kawase Career

Life and career

After bassist Shunsaku Okuda and guitarist Ryo Matsui saw her perform in an amateur talent competition, Kawase was asked to perform in The Brilliant Green as the lead vocalist. The non-album singles "Bye Bye Mr." was one of The Brilliant Green's first two albums. "Goodbye and Good Luck" and "Main" were two of Mug's popular hits, with moderate success. They gained fame in 1998 when their third single, "There Will Be Love There," was chosen as the theme song for the popular Japanese drama Love Again, and as a result, they climbed to the top of the charts. They released their self-titled debut album in just two days after scoring another top-one hit with "Tsumetai Hana." The "There Will Be Live There," the country's first national tour, sold out in just three minutes.

In 2013, Kawase began releasing music from all her personas in honor of the Brilliant Green's 15th anniversary.

Kawase joined DefStar Records in 2001 and began her solo career under the name of Tommy february6 (named after a combination of her name and birthdate) with "Everyday at the Bus Stop." Tommy february6's persona and sound are heavily inspired by British and American 1980's synthpop, as well as a sle of "Since Yesterday." Kawase's initial intention with Tommy february6 was to create a character that was far from innocent, yet cute in both sound and appearance; Tommy february6 was designed to be someone who was true to her emotions despite the cutesy appearance of her outward appearance and did as she desired (and as such, Tommy february6 is seen repeatedly in music videos drinking alcohol from flasks, bars, etc.) Kiss One More Time was Kawase's second single under the name, and his third single under the name was "Bloomin'." (a song that was also used in a commercial for cosmetic firm, Shiseido) — An article that was also used in a commercial for cosmetic firm Shiseido. Kawase's debut album, Tommy february6, was released on her birthday.

Tommy february6 + Hawaii was published in October 2002 by Tommy february6 + Hawaii. It's presented in the form of a mock travel guide, with features such as restaurant reviews, sightseeing hotspots, and cultural information. Culinari's outwardly cute persona, crude outline sketches of animals and fairies litter the pages (as seen on the cover), as well as thought bubbles gracing several of the photographs, which have the distinct appearance of doodles. One year after the unveiling of Tommy february 6, Kawase released her fourth single under the name: "Je t'aime je t'aime." At this point, the original idea began to disappoint her, and Kawase began to feel that the story could no longer be maintained. "Love Is Forever" is her fifth album, but she also released her debut single "Wait Till I Can Dream" on the day. Tommy heavenly6 was born out of a fantasy that Tommy february6 had, in which she accepts all of her personality's that she had previously avoided.

Tommy Angels, the pop group, was founded in 2003 by her. There was only one single, "You'll Be My Boy," when it was launched on December 17, 2003, and at No. 1 in the top chart position. On the Oricon Top 200 Weekly Peak chart, 78 points. Kawase wrote the lyrics for the album (with the help of Malibu Convertible), and he also produced the music. Following this one, the band disbanded.

"Tommy Airline" was the second studio album under the Tommy february6 name, and it came shortly after. Tommy heavenly6's second single "Hey My Friend" and the debut of Tommy february6's "Lovely: Yume Miru Lovely Boy" as the ending song for the 7th Pokémon film appeared as the ending track in "Tommy Airline." Tommy heavenly6's third album, "Ready?" released in August 2005 (nearly two years since her first single). "The first album on her own was immediately followed by her own long-awaited eponymous debut album." Kawase decided to focus on the Tommy heavenly6 persona after the introduction of Tommy february6's "Lonely in Gorgeous."

Tommy heavenly6 released five new singles in 2006 and 2007, which culminated in her second album Heavy Starry Heavenly. This was the culmination of her Heavy Starry Tour's four-live performances as Tommy heavenly6 during March 2007. She brought the majority of her songs to this live format, including her now regular backing band and her bandmates from The Brilliant Green, as well as her fellow students. Through cameos on Tommy heavenly6's music videos, such as "Lollipop Candy Bad Girl" and "I Love Xmas," Kawase retained the Tommy february6 persona.

Tommy february6 was one of 12 people on We Love Cyndi's compilation album "All Through the Night" by Cyndi Lauper in 2008. Kawase unveiled two best-of albums under both Tommy aliases, Strawberry Cream Soda Pop Daydream (as February6) and Gothic Melting Ice Cream's Darkness Nightmare (as heavenly6) on February 25, 2009. Both albums have collected the Tommy singles and some album tracks, as well as having a new track each.

Tommy heavenly6 released I Kill My Heart, a new concept album that was mainly composed by Chiffon Brownie in April 2009. Two of the promotional videos for her third album were accompanied by two versions: one as Tommy heavenly6 and the other as Tommy february6. Both Tommy heavenly6 and Tommy february6's contracts with DefStar Records ended shortly after the release of I Kill My Heart, and they were not renewed.
