Gackt Life

Gakuto Oshiro (born July 4, 1973), better known by his mononymous stage name Gackt, is a Japanese musician, singer, guitarist, record producer, and actor.

Gackt, a young boy in Okinawa, Japan, learned the piano and enka before becoming interested in rock music while attending high school.

He has been active since 1993, first as the frontman of the short-lived independent band Cains:Feel, then for the now-defunct visual kei rock band Malice Mizer, before starting his solo career in 1999.

He has recorded nine studio albums and holds the most top ten singles in Japanese music history with forty-eight singles.

His single "Returner (Yami no Shuen)," which was the first and only single to reach the top of the Oricon charts, was released on June 20, 2007.

Gackt's music has sold over 10 million albums in addition to being established in the modern game market (Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII), anime films (New Fist of the North Star and Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam), and a television show.

In addition to his musical career, Gackt has appeared in a few films, including a film directed by him, Moon Child, his international debut Bunraku, and a television series starring NHK drama Furin Kazan.

He also appeared in live on stage plays, one of which was written, composed, and directed by him: Moon Saga - Mysteries of Yoshitsune I&III.

He has appeared in classical interpretations of his songs twice with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.

He also provided voice samples for Internet Co., Ltd.'s first Vocaloid, Gackpoid.

Early life

Gackt was born in Okinawa, Japan, on July 4, 1973, as the second of three children in a Ryukyuan family. His father was a music instructor who mainly played the trumpet, and his mother was also a tutor. Gackt has an older sister and a younger brother. He lived in several cities in addition to Okinawa: Yamanoka, Fukuoka, Shiga, Osaka, and Kyoto. He attended Moriyama High School in Shiga and was enrolled in the Kyoto Gakuen University.

When his parents started his classical piano lessons at age three, Gackt's musical education began at an early age. Because of time spent in elementary school and frequent change of teachers due to relocation from city to city, keeping his classical piano lessons became more difficult at age seven. His parents were able to complete lessons for another four years, but it will take another four years. However, Gackt has returned to his piano studies, as well as writing orchestral scores after losing a piano competition to a boy he encountered in middle school. He has credited classical pianist and composer Frédéric Chopin with "the one who taught me the beauty, breadth, joy, and kindness of music; that music could give people hope; and the meaning of the layers of sound." Chopin isn't exaggeration to say that it's the source of my songs, and it's not exaggeration to say that it isn't an exaggeration. Since his father played the trumpet, Gackt is also familiar with brass instruments. He didn't get into rock music until high school and then went on to learn modern percussion, having only listened to classical music and enka as a child. Compared to his time in an orchestra, he was initially reluctant to join amateur rock bands because they were considered below average in terms of playing in an orchestra. However, audiences' excitement and support convinced him to continue performing in those amateur bands.

Personal life

When he was 20 years old, Gackt briefly married a Korean woman for a short time. Gackt has lived in Tokyo, Japan, for the majority of his life. With his primary residence in Malaysia, where he has a house of 1,700 square meters in a residential area on Kuala Lumpur's outskirts, he moved to the Philippines and Hong Kong in 2012.

He is fluent in Mandarin, Korean, English, and French, as well as some French. He holds a second-degree black belt in the ITF Taekwondo, as well as other martial arts such as karate, boxing, and jiu-jitsu, among other things. He loves playing poker and has competed on live tournaments since 2017, winning $7,600 from his fourth-place finish in Aria High Roller, Las Vegas.

His philosophical approach to life is similar to Japanese Bushido. His personal religious conviction is similar to that of a nature god. His family believed that their deceased relatives were gods and they should honor them, so there are two models of Ryukyuan Buddhism in Okinawa whether to honour the ancestors or nature. It does not have a well-defined theorization or rituals, but it does have an acknowledgment of everything that surrounds people, "a love of nature."

Gackt Career

Music career

In the early 1990s, Gackt was working as a host and dealer in a casino as well as being an assistant drummer for an amateur band. At the time, he wanted to be more involved in his music but had a pessimistic outlook on life. He met a businessman who inspired him to find a purpose in life, his first love being music while at the casino. About a year later, he left the band and found himself in a variety of jobs, one of which was as a sound technician at a studio where he could practice drums. At a music live house in Kyoto, guitarist You Kurosaki, his future solo career support guitarist, met guitarist You Kurosaki. They formed Cains:Feel, whose name had a biblical link to the tale of Cain and Abel. Gackt became the frontman, and the band went on to record a demo tape before disbanding, but the group ran out of singers.

He was introduced to Malice Mizer, a visual kei band, in 1995, who was on hiatus as a result of Tetsu's departure. In October 1995, Gackt moved to Tokyo and joined them. He also performed two songs on their catalog, "Regulation" and "Le Ciel," the former being their most popular single as a band. During this period, the band's fame soared; and, after four years and two studio albums in January 1999, it was announced that it had left the band. According to his autobiography, the members' differences, a sudden wealth of money, and their alienation from the band contributed to his departure. Mana said he approached Gackt about him appearing in the band's 25th anniversary concerts in September 2018, but the singer turned down.
