The Weeknd Life

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye (born February 16, 1990), also known as The Weeknd, is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and record producer.

In 2010, he anonymously uploaded several songs on YouTube under the name "The Weeknd" and launched the mixtapes House of Balloons and Echoes of Silence in 2011, which earned him a following and admiration from several mainstream publications.

In 2013, The Weeknd released his debut album Kiss Land and later this year his most critically acclaimed album Beauty Behind the Madness (2015), which became his first Billboard 200 number-one single and appeared on Billboard's Top 100 top-one singles "Can't Feel My Face" and "The Hills," among others.

With "Can't Feel My Face," "Earned It," and "The Hills," the Weeknd became the first artist to hold top-three positions on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart simultaneously.

Beauty Behind the Madness received Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 56th Grammy Awards, and was nominated for Album of the Year.

The Weeknd published his third album Starboy (2016), which inspired Billboard's number one hit "Starboy" a year after its debut on the album.

My Dear Melancholy (2018), his debut EP, was a big success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200.

The Weeknd, which is also involved in company ventures, announced a joint venture with Puma as a Global Brand Ambassador in 2016.

He has his own XO branded merchandise, which was further extended by a partnership with H&M to launch its Spring 2017 campaign.

He began marketing and advertising on a Marvel.com account in October 2017.

A week later, he was at New York Comic-Con, and it was announced that a Starboy comic book would be released on June 13, 2018, with the title character being a superhero modelled after himself.

The Recording Industry Association of America has designated "The Hills" as Diamond (RIAA).

The Weeknd, one of Canada's most influential Canadian artists, was given the Allan Slaight Award for "making a positive contribution in the fields of music, film, literature, graphic or performing arts, education, or philanthropy."

Early life

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye was born in Toronto, Ontario, on February 16, 1990. He is the only child of Ethiopian immigrants Makkonen Tesfaye and Samrawit Hailu, who separated shortly after his birth. His mother and grandmother brought him up in Scarborough's district. He has an estranged friendship with his father, "I knew him vaguely when I was six years old and then again when I was 11 or 12, and he had a new family and children." I don't even know where he lived — I'd say it'd be for at least a night. I'm positive he's a good guy. I never liked him. He wasn't abusive, he wasn't an alcoholic, and he wasn't an assassinated pig. He was just there.

Tesfaye was born as an Ethiopian Orthodox saint. "I dunno...everything is a test, and if you are religious or spiritual, you must go through it." When asked whether or not he is religious, he responded to Variety in 2020. Amharic, which he learned through his grandmother, is his native language. He later became fluent in French by attending a French-immersion academy. He was further educated at the West Hill Collegiate Institute and the Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute.

Tesfaye and his two classmates, including his best friend and now creative director La Mar Taylor, jumped out of school and into an apartment in Parkdale's neighborhood. This period, he has compared it to the film Kids (1995) "without the AIDS," because they lived a hedonistic lifestyle. During this time, he has also suffered from homelessness and was jailed on several occasions, prompting him to "smarten up" instead of "smarting out."

Tesfaye people used ketamine, cocaine, MDMA, magic mushrooms, and cough syrup often. When it came to writing music in December 2016, he said that heroin were a "crutch" for him. He referred to himself as "sober lite" in August 2021, implying that he had stopped using opioids with the exception of marijuana. "I'm not a heavy drinker, as much as I used to be." He also stated that he drinks alcohol occasionally. The pleasure of bingeing isn't there.

Personal life

Tesfaye is well-known and prefers to keep his personal life out of the public eye. He avoided participating in interviews and instead preferred to communicate on Twitter, which he attributed to shyness and insecurity. To this day, he is still adamant about not being included in interviews, only willing to be interviewed in unusual situations.

Tesfaye was on again, off-again friendship with American model Bella Hadid from April 2015 to August 2019. In December 2015, she appeared in the music video for his single "In the Night" on YouTube. Selena Gomez, an American singer-actress, appeared on Selena Gomez from January to October 2017. Both of the relationships attracted widespread media attention, and were the subject of tabloid speculation.

Tesfaye's hairstyle, which has been described as one of his most identifiable features, has been traced in part to American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. He started growing it out in 2011 and remarked how simple it was to maintain with "a hard shampoo every now and a while." Prior to the debut of Starboy, he shaved his hair in 2016. Tesfaye's first name was often suffixed with "xo," which is often used as an emoticon for hugs and kisses on social media. This was his intention, according to Hermione Hoby of The Guardian, although others suspect it was a remark on his recreational use of ecstasy and oxycodone. In the run-up to the debut of Starboy, he later changed the handles on his social media to reflect his stage name.

Tesfaye was arrested in Las Vegas in January 2015 for reportedly punching a police officer after being taken into an elevator to end a fight. He pleaded no contest and was sentenced to complete fifty hours of community service.

Tesfaye lives in Bel Air, Los Angeles, as of August 2021. He bought a home in Hidden Hills, California, in 2017, which he sold to Madonna in 2021 for $19.3 million. Tesfaye used to live in penthouses in Westwood, Los Angeles, and New York City.
