Cox, a born and raised in Toronto, began acting on television commercials at the age of 12, and appeared in numerous talent shows in her teenage years before becoming a professional backing vocalist for Celine Dion.

She migrated to the United States and was signed by Clive Davis to Arista Records in 1994, releasing her self-titled debut album the following year.

One Wish (1998) was certified platinum in the United States and was characterized by the commercial success of the pop crossover song "Nobody Supposed to Be Here," Cox's most commercially successful entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number two and remaining there for eight weeks in a row.

After a modest commercial success, Cox's third studio album The Morning After (2002), which saw moderate commercial success, has been signed to J Records. Cox made her film debut in the Canadian drama film Love Come Down (2000) and her debut in the Broadway musical Aida role in 2004.

She has since appeared in smaller films and several musical productions, including the horror-drama Jekyll & Hyde, the biographical musical Josephine, and The Bodyguard's musical version.

Destination Moon (2007) and The Promise (2008) Cox's most recent studio albums, Destination Moon (2007) and The Promise (2008), were first released by Cox's own independent record label, Deco Recording Group.

The album's monetary and critical success at number 102 on US Billboard 200, but it's sincerity, winning a gold medal from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), with a platinum medal in Canada. "Sentimental" lead single "Sentimental" made the top ten on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, while "Who Do U Love" soared to international prominence, winning top ten hits in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, as well as the top of Billboard's Dance Club Songs. Deborah Cox received a Juno Award for Best R&B/Soul Recording at the annual awards ceremony in 1996, earning her a Best Soul/R&B New Artist nomination at the 1996 American Music Awards.

To the soundtrack of the 1997 film Money Talks, Cox contributed the non-album song "Things Just Ain't the Same." Hex Hector's dance remix of the song became her second number one hit on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart, and she was included on her second album, 1998's One Wish. Montell Jordan, Anthony "Shep" Crawford, Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, and DJ Quik were among Davis' self-titled debut albums, but it was also a slew of new producers and employees to incorporate dance and club music, as well as self-titled debut album. One Wish reached gold status in Canada at number 72 on the Billboard 200 and received a platinum medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects, while getting platinum recognition from the RIAA. The album capitalized on the success of lead single "Nobody Supposed to Be Here," which became Cox's most popular entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained at number two for eight weeks in a row, making it one of the longest stays at number two in chart history. The song also climbed to number one on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart, spending a whopping 14 weeks at number one, while R. L. Huggar's "I Can't Be Friends," a duet with R. Huggar, has reached the top ten, with "It's Over Now" and "I Never Knew" as the top ten, while "We Can't Be Friends" and "I Never Knew" have debuted on the song "We Can's on the album, ten on the Hot R.

It was released as a radio-only promo single and debuted at number 74 on Hot R&B/Hip Songs, incorporating a backing track to Ludwig van Beethoven's "Für Elise" during the intro and becoming a minor hit on Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 70 and peaking at number 14 on Hot R&B/Hip Songs. Cox released "Absolutely Not" on the soundtrack to Dr. Dolittle 2 in 2001, her sixth number one hit on Billboard's Dance Club Songs.

Following a frustratingly long absence from Arista, Cox's third album The Morning After was released on J Records in November 2002. Davis, the Cox's first record under Clive Davis' brand, was broken, with Davis, who was then the Cox's first executive producer, now serving as executive producer. Keen to capitalize on the popularity of her previous album One Wish, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Jermaine Dupri, Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, and Shep Crawford, as well as up-and-coming producers Warryn Campbell, Johntá Austin, and Alex Richbourg have all been enlisted by Cox to work with him. It's the first album to debut and peak at number 38 and seventh on the US Billboard 200 and Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Ever since, a mash-up of urban R&B and adult contemporary songs with additional dance/house tracks. The album was less well-received than her previous album, but it did have two singles on the US Dance Club Songs chart, including "Mr. Lonely" and "Play Your Part."

Cox made her Broadway debut in The Elton John-Tim Rice musical Aida in February 2004, when she succeeded singer Michelle Williams in her role as Nubian princess Nubian princess. In 2005, Cox appeared in the films Blood of a Champion and Love on Layaway. Her voice appeared in the film "Nobody Cares" earlier this year. Cox's club appearances have continued to grow, but she and her family and new album projects were on the forefront. "Definition of Love" by the year's end was included in the film Akeelah and the Bee, but not as a single.

Destination Moon, Deborah Mounsey's fourth album from 2005 to 2006, was released and produced by Rob Mounsey. Dinah Washington, Cox's tribute album, said it was a concept album that she had been contemplating for years. Rob Mounsey's orchestra arranged the majority of the album, with Rob Mounsey arranging. Destination Moon was the highest on the Billboard Top Jazz Albums chart in June 2017, after being released by Decca Records in June 2017. In Leslie Small's film A Good Man is Hard to Find, Cox co-starred Golden Brooks and Darius McCrary. The comedy, based on the musical stage play of the same name, depicts three women who each have romantic difficulties that affect their personal and spiritual lives. Cox performed the Canadian national anthem at the NBA All-Star Game in New Orleans in 2008, receiving rave reviews. She also contributed "This Gift" to the soundtrack of Tyler Perry's 2008 romantic drama film Meet the Browns, directed by Tyler Perry, and appeared as a supporting act on Cyndi Lauper's True Colors Tour 2008.

Cox's sixth studio album The Promise was released on November 11, 2008, by Deco Recording Group, Cox's own independent label, with distribution handled by Image Entertainment. It was a step away from her previous album, marking her return to R&B music and bringing a diverse variety of songwriters and producers on the album, including The Avila Brothers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Devo Springsteen, Big Jim, and Shep Crawford. At the 2009 Juno Awards, it received mostly favorable feedback from music journalists. "Beautiful U R" -- her second single since "Nobody's Supposed to be Here," became a top ten hit in Canada, where it was named platinum by Music Canada, as well as her tenth chart-to-top on Billboard's Dance Club Songs. In July 2009, Cox and American R&B singer Kenny Lattimore joined forces for the joint Timeless Promise Tour in support of the album. She appeared on "Leave the World Behind," a house track produced by four DJs Axwell, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Laidback Luke.

In 2010, it was revealed that Cox would be teaming up with Kelly Price and Tamia to form a supergroup. Although the trio performed many tracks together, their joint album The Queen Project didn't arrive due to timing and label politics. Through Deco Entertainment, Cox released the dance-heavy single "If It Wasn't for Love" in 2011. It was her eleventh top spot on Billboard's Dance Club Songs, and it was to precede a new studio collection that was unveiled. In September 2012, Cox performed in her first appearance as the female lead Lucy in a revival of the musical Jekyll & Hyde, which toured North America for twenty-five weeks. Although the show only had a limited Broadway run, Cox's appearance was lauded. She appeared on "No Labels" in 2012, the official anthem of the same-titled American bipartisan group, as well as rapper Akon. Cox appeared on the non-album track "Higher" for the first year. It was her twelfth top-one hit on the US Dance Club Songs chart when it was announced through Electronic Kingdom Records. Cox, along with Melissa Etheridge, Tom Robinson, and Steve Grand, was one of the opening ceremonies of WorldPride in Toronto in 2014.

She sang for the made for television biographical film Whitney, directed by Angela Bassett based on American recording artist Whitney Houston in 2015. In the film, Cox appeared on "I Will Always Love You," "I'm Your Baby Tonight," and "The Greatest Love of All" was performed by Cox. She released the deep house-influenced "Kinda Miss You" as singles as well as the ballad "More Than I Knew" as singles. Both artists were scheduled to debut on her sixth album Work of Art, which was originally scheduled for release in August 2015 via Deco and Primary Wave Music. However, the album was still unveiled after several delays. Cox appeared in Josephine Baker's Broadway-bound musical Josephine, which chronicled the singer's life between 1939 and 1945, and she starred as Rachel Marron in the North American Tour of the musical The Bodyguard, based on the 1992 film of the same name. Cox's EP I Will Always Love You on Deco and Broadway Records, which features cover versions of seven Whitney Houston originals as well as Houston's discussion of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You." During LGBTQ pride season on Radikal Records and Galactic Media, she released "Let the World Be Ours Tonight" on June 2017. It was her 13th single to debut on Billboard's Dance Club Songs, her 13th single.

In June 2019, Cox appeared at Stonewall 50 – WorldPride NYC 2019, marking the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots. Through Deco Entertainment, she released Rico Love-produced single "Easy Way" in November 2019. The song was supposed to lead her yet-unveiled seventh studio album, which was expected to be out in late 2020. A month later, it was followed by the Christmas album "Gimme Gimme Some Christmas." In February 2020, Cox co-starred opposite Roger Guenveur Smith in the BET+ television thriller Influence, an extension of Carl Weber's award-winning 2018 book in which a major-name celebrity singer is accused of murdering her husband.
