Gates started out writing "So Far Away" in honor of his grandfather, who appeared in the special edition of Revolver magazine, the same day as the Nightmare album was released. However, the album is now primarily about his former bandmate, best friend, and former drummer of Avenged Sevenfold, The Rev., who died on December 28, 2009.
The Rev and Gates were members of an experimental metal band named Pinkly Smooth. Buck Silverspur on bass and D-Rock on drums formed in Huntington Beach, California, in the summer of 2001. On Bucktan Records, the band released Unfortunate Snort, which has a crossover sound that features mainly punk, ska, and progressive metal. Justin Sane, a former Avenged Sevenfold bassist, performed keyboards and piano on the album. Pinkly Smooth was expected to release another record, but due to the Rev's death, it is unlikely that they would produce any more content. Gates, on the other hand, has stated that he will consider remastering the tracks from Unfortunate Snort and re-releasing the album.
