Nick Valensi Life

Nicholas Valensi (born January 16, 1981) is an American guitarist, singer, guitarist, and session performer.

In the American rock band The Strokes, he is best known for his role as lead and rhythm guitarist, as well as occasional backing vocalist and mellotron player.

Valensi has performed as a singer and session guitarist with a number of bands, including Sia, Blondie, Brody Dalle, Regina Spektor, and Kate Pierson.

He founded side-project CRX in 2013, which sees him as a producer, composer, and rhythm guitarist.

On October 28, 2016, New Skin, the band's debut album, was released.

Early life

Valensi was born in New York City to a Tunisian father and Danielle, a French mother. His mother was from a Catholic family in Southern France near Bordeaux, and his father was a North African Sephardic Jew. Valensi's mother had moved to Boston as a child and met his father in New York; his mother changed to Judaism to marry his father.

Valensi was born on Manhattan's Upper East Side with two sisters, Céline and Alessandra. Valensi spent summers at his grandfather's house near Bordeaux before he reached the age of 16. Following an impromptu strum on one of his father's guitars, he began playing guitar at the age of five. He was referred to as a natural guitarist by his quickness at learning to strum along with songs' rhythm at a young age. Valensi's father died when Nick was nine years old. Valensi was arrested at the age of 11 and was sentenced to a year as a probation officer.

Valensi attended public schools in New York City as a child. He began attending The Dwight School at the age of 13, where he met Julian Casablancas on the first day of the school's orientation program. Fabrizio Moretti, a classmate, was discovered soon after, and the three of them formed a band. "I always thought I wanted to be able to play any song you could imagine," he was once quoted as saying. However, it's when I first started playing with Julian that I really began to understand music." Valensi had also met Nikolai Fraiture at this time through Casablancas. The two students then met at Hunter College together.

Personal life

Valensi married Amanda de Cadenet, an English photographer and television presenter, in summer 2006. Valensi has fraternal twins, Silvan and Ella, who live in De Cadenet. Through de Cadenet's first marriage, he has a step-daughter, Atlanta. In 2005, De Cadenet published Rare Birds, a collection of photographs of Valensi, which she refers to as her "muse" on her website. Valensi has lived in Los Angeles with his family since the mid-2000s. They have lived in Van Nuys and Studio City in Los Angeles, as well as in Midtown Manhattan and Park Slope in New York City.

Valensi is a French speaker.

Nick Valensi Career

Career

Valensi formed a small band with vocalist Casablancas and drummer Moretti in high school and stayed after he and Casablancas left Dwight. When guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. arrived in fall 1998, Nikolai Fraiture began playing as the bassist, and the band was formed. The Strokes' first appearance as The Strokes appeared at the Spiral in New York City on September 14, 1999. The band began The Modern Age EP in 2001 under Rough Trade Records and was signed by RCA Records for a five-album contract. With tours and festival sets in North America, Europe, South America, East Asia, and Australia, the band released six albums including Is This It, Room on Fire, First Impressions of Earth, Angles, Comedown Machine, and The New Abnormal. Following the completion of the band's album distribution contract with RCA Records in 2013, the band has continued to release new music through Casablancas' Cult Records.

Valensi co-founded the Los Angeles-based rock band CRX in 2013. He is the frontman of the band, and is backed by drummer Ralph Alexander, multi-instrumentalist Brad Oberhofer, bassist Jon Safley, and guitarist Darian Zahedi. On October 28, 2016, the band's debut album, New Skin, was released. The 2019 Peek was followed by a record. Valensi has characterized the band's sound as a mix of power pop and heavy metal, and has cited The Cars, Cheap Trick, and Elvis Costello as influences.

Valensi has also performed and written for The Strokes and CRX, although much of his career has been devoted to his contemporaries as a session singer and songwriter. One of his first appearances on his debut was playing guitar on Regina Spektor's album "Better," which was released on her 2006 album Begin to Hope and later released as a single in a slightly different version in which the guitar parts were rearranged.

On several occasions, Devendra Banhart, The Stroke's Moretti, and Sia have collaborated. On Devendra Banhart's "Shabop Shalom" on the 2007 album Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon, Nick Valensi sang backing vocals and played guitar. In addition, he appeared backing vocals on his bandmate Fab Moretti's debut album, Little Joy. He appears on "No One's Better Sake" by Little Joy as the drummer. He appears in the film "Adam & Steve," a song performed by Devendra Banhart and Moretti's side project Megapuss.

He appears on Sia's album "We Are Born" and has written several hooks and melodies on it. Sia has also revealed that she and Valensi are planning to write songs for other musicians together. He also co-wrote the song "Hostage" on Sia's 2014 album 1000 Forms of Fear. Brody Dalle in 2014, Kate Pierson for her 2015 album Guitars and Microphones, Kesha, Kesha, and then with Sia for the 2017 Blondie song, "Best Day Ever."
