Sushil Kumar Solanki (born 26 May 1983) is an Indian freestyle wrestler.

He won the 2010 world championship, a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics, and a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, making him the first Indian (since independence) to win two individual Olympic medals.

He carried the Indian flag at the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, his second appearance in wrestling for India and the first since Khashaba Dadah Jadhav's bronze medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics.

He was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in July 2009, India's highest award for sportspeoples.

In the Queen's Baton Relay for the 2010 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony, Kumar delivered the Queen's Baton to Prince Charles on October 3, 2010.

At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Sushil earned the gold medal in the 74 kg division.

Personal life

Kumar was born in Baprola village, south of Delhi, by a Jat family of Solanki clan. Diwan Singh, his father, was a chauffeur in MTNL Delhi, but his mother, Kamla Devi, is a housewife.

Kumar was inspired by his father, himself a wrestler, and his cousin Sandeep to participate in wrestling. Sandeep's wrestling career was dropped later in life, as the family could only afford one wrestler. Kumar competed in pehlwani wrestling at the Chhatrasal Stadium from the age of 14. With inadequate funds and no facilities for wrestling in India, even for the 2008 Olympic team, his family made sure he received the correct dietary supplements by giving him tinned milk, ghee, and fresh vegetables. He is a devoted Hindu and strict vegetarian.

He has completed his High School (B.P.E.) (M.P.E.) and Post-Graduation (M.P.E.) Dadri, Noida College of Physical Education. Kumar is currently employed with the Indian Railways as an assistant commercial manager.
