Alex Shelley Life

Patrick Martin (born May 23, 1983) is an American professional wrestler better known by the ring name Alex Shelley.

He is best known for his stint with Impact Wrestling as one half of the Motor City Machine Guns with Chris Sabin.

He first made his name on the independent circuit for Ring of Honor (ROH), as well as in Japan for Pro Wrestling Zero1-Max.

He has also worked with New Japan Pro-Wrestling, where he is a former IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team champion.

He is the lead singer of a rock band called The High Crusade, which features his acquaintances and fellow wrestlers Chris Sabin and Petey Williams, aside from wrestling.

Personal life

Martin is a fan of punk rock. He has embroidered the brand of the band Teenage Bottlerocket on his ring dress, and the band has expressed interest in being in touch with him.

Martin is a physical therapy specialist who is preparing for a career after his days as an in-ring wrestler. Martin wanted to do it because of a general lack of physical therapists in professional wrestling and the desire to assist others. Martin began a year-long clinical education to become accredited following the expiration of his ROH employment in 2018. Due to COVID-19, his career as a clinician led him to miss the Hard to Kill pay-per-view and remained specializing on his core subjects.

Alex Shelley Career

Professional wrestling career

Martin began training in the early 2002 under Breyer Wellington and Truth Martini. He then enrolled in the Can-Am Wrestling School in Border City and began training under Joe E. Legend and Scott D'Amore. Alex Shelley, the lead singer of the 1970s punk rock band The Buzzcocks, debuted in March 2002 as Alex Shelley, a name he invented by combining the forename of Alex, the protagonist of the 1962 novel A Clockwork Orange, with the surname of Pete Shelley. He was hospitalized with a broken jaw when he slipped on a wet ring and struck the unpadded ring apron six months into his career. Shelley's jaw was also fitted with steel plates. Shelley joined Ian Rotten's IWA Mid-South promotion after eight months. He served in the IWA for six months before joining the Philadelphia-based Combat Zone Wrestling. He joined Ring of Honor (ROH) not long afterward.

Shelley appeared on WWE Heat in the International Version of June 12, 2005, losing to Simon Dean after being struck with the Simonizer. His appearance was a tryout, but nothing came of it.

Shelley debuted in Ring of Honor on June 28, 2003, at WrestleRave 2003, fighting B. J. Whitmer, Tony Mamaluke, and Jimmy Jacobs in a Four Corners Survival match, which was won by Whitmer. He appeared with ROH sporadically throughout the remainder of 2003 and early 2004, feuding with Jimmy Jacobs and Matt Stryker.

Shelley formed a solid, "Generation Next" with Austin Aries, Jack Evans, and Roderick Strong at Generation Next on May 22, 2004. Generation Next, led by Shelley, spent the entire match shaming other wrestlers, saying that they were "the best that Ring of Honor has to offer." They began feuding with wrestlers with a reverence for tradition, like Matt Stryker, Jimmy Rave, and R. J. Brewer.

Shelley lost to Doug Williams in the finals of a tournament for the vacant ROH Pure Championship on July 17, 2004, at Reborn: Completion. Generation Next attacked Ricky Steamboat after he clash with CM Punk, with Punk subsequently siding with Steamboat to prevent Generation Next. This culminated in a feud between Generation Next and Ricky Steamboat's allies, resulting in a forty-minute elimination match pitting Generation Next against CM Punk, John Walters, Jimmy Jacobs, and Ace Steel on October 2. Shelley and Aries survived, and Generation Next won the game. Shelley revealed that after the match, he would face Samoa Joe for the ROH World Championships. Aries proclaimed that he was going after the title, with Shelley noting him to "remember where your loyalties lie."

Shelley and Strong were defeated by CM Punk and Steve Corino on December 26, 2004, at the Final Battle 2004. Aries, who was concerned that Shelley was spending way too much time in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), then leading Generation Next, came to the ring and ordered that Shelley resign as the leader. Shelley had been battered by Aries and Strong and kicked out of Generation Next before Shelley could respond, making him a fan favorite in the process.

Shelley feuded with Generation Next beginning in early 2005, unsuccessfully battling Aries for the ROH World Championship at Manhattan Mayhem on May 7. Shelley was in a tag match against Aries and Strong on July 23, with him selecting a mystery partner. Shelley speculated in a backstage preview as to who his partner will be, saying it might be a new wrestler making their Ring of Honor debut. He later confessed that he did not bring someone into ROH but that he had joined "The Embassy," a heel stable run by Prince Nana. The Embassy won their first match in a feud with Generation Next that will last for the remainder of the year, partnering with Fast Eddie Vegas that night. On December 3, the war came to an end with Austin Aries, Roderick Strong, Jack Evans, and Matt Sydal of Generation Next defeated Shelley, Jimmy Rave, Abyss, and Nana of The Embassy.

Shelley teamed up with Rave to defeat Claudio Castagnoli and Azrieal on January 14, 2006. After his heroic defense of Chris Hero, Prince Nana bid to buy the ROH World Championship from Bryan Danielson later that evening. When Danielson refused to sell it, the Embassy with Shelley said it was his "Kryptonite" as Danielson's long-time competitor and former Embassy worker, Spanky, was beaten on multiple occasions. The Embassy of Shelley, Rave, and Abyss won the 2006 Trios Tournament overtaking Generation Next of Jack Evans and Matt Sydal, and their partner Jimmy Yang in the finals, and so each wrestler was given any match they wanted, with Shelley and Rave announcing their participation in the ROH World Championship. Shelley had intended to face Danielson on February 11, but Total Nonstop Action Wrestling told Shelley that he would fly back to Orlando, Florida, so he would not miss their pay-per-view the following day. Shelley would return to his title shot at Arena Warfare one month later, but was unable to defeat Danielson.

Shelley will appear in ROH for the next few months before eventually ending in June. Jimmy Rave and Conrad Kennedy III III, his last appearance in Ring of Honor, took place on June 24 as he supervised Jimmy Rave and Conrad Kennedy III in a losing effort against the Briscoe Brothers.

Following the Briscoe Brothers winning the ROH World Tag Team Championship, he and Chris Sabin returned to ROH on March 30, 2007. On April 28, the two opponents met Jay Briscoe for a shot at the championship before he accepted him. The two players will ultimately lose the match and leave the organization.

Shelley and Sabin returned to ROH in April 2008, defeating the Briscoe Brothers (Jimmy Jacobs and Tyler Black) and defeating the Briscoe Brothers (Jay and Mark) on the 18 and 19 respectively.

Shelley and Sabin returned to ROH in August 2008, battling Austin Aries and Bryan Danielson to a 25-minute time limit draw and losing to Kevin Steen and El Generico on the 1st and 2nd respectively. Shelley and Sabin had been supposed to return to ROH on October 24 and 25, but they had been barred from the festivities by TNA and replaced by The Latin American Xchange.

Ring of Honor revealed on February 13, 2010, at their 8th Anniversary Exhibition, that the Motor City Machine Guns would return to the company in New York City on May 8. The ROH World Tag Team Champions The Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli) were disqualified from the match on May 8 when the Briscoe Brothers intervened in the match.

Shelley returned to ROH on December 7, 2014, where he and Kushida unsuccessfully challenged reDRagon (Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly) for the ROH World Tag Team Championship. On August 22, 2015, the Time Splitters returned to ROH, defeating the Briscoes at Field of Honor.

Shelley joined Pro Wrestling Zero1-Max in March 2005. In Tokyo, Japan, he won the vacant Zero1-Max United States Openweight Championship, defeating Sonjay Dutt. His reign lasted until November 23rd of that year, when he lost the title to Christopher Daniels.

Shelley and Chris Sabin became the NWA International Lightweight Tag Team Champions after beating champions, Ikuto Hidaka and Minoru Fujita on August 25, 2006 at Korakuen Hall's Zero-1 Max Exhibition. On April 6, 2008, they lost the titles to Minoru Fujita and Takuya Sugawara's team.

Shelley began working with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling on July 8, 2004. Alex Shelley, a Goldy Locks and dubbed "Baby Bear" in his debut. Shelley Rhodes pleaded for his freedom from TNA a year after booker Dusty Rhodes stopped using him.

Shelley signed a new TNA booker in 2005 after Rhodes resigned as TNA booker, and she returned to Shocker on June 19, 2005, losing to Shocker. With Michael Shane's departure from America's Most Wanted at No Surrender 2005, the pair lost to America's Most Wanted at No Surrender 2005. Shelley qualified for the TNA 2005 Super X Cup Tournament, but in the semifinals, she lost to Samoa Joe. Sean Waltman joined the Chris Candido Memorial Tag Team Tournament as his tag team partner, and the tournament was won by beating Shocker and Sabin in the finals on the September 9 episode of TNA Impact! Waltman and Shelley were given a chance at the NWA World Tag Team Championship in a four-way tag team match at Unbreakable on September 11. Shelley was left homeless after Waltman's absence from the game, but she decided to wrestle alone. For the majority of the match, he was doubled teamed by Team Canada (Eric Young and A-1) until Johnny Candido, Chris Candido's brother, climbed onto the apron and accepted Shelley's tag. However, Candido was pinned by Young just after, with Shelley being kicked out of the match as a result.

Shelley competed in the X Division as a villain throughout late-2005, clashing Austin Aries on several occasions. In November 2005, he introduced a gimmick that saw him bring a camcorder (the "Shelleycam") to ringside in order to film matches and then analyze later for educational reasons (in reality, Shelley owned over 200 professional wrestling videotapes at the time). In late 2005, he began competing with his former Generation Next teammates Sonjay Dutt, Chris Sabin, and Matt Bentley, all fighting for increased responsibilities in the company after road agent Jerry Lynn became the first to lose a series of matches in which the re-formed Generation Next came out in first place.

Shelley was recruited by Jeff Jartt in early 2006 to get a candid video footage of Jackie Gayda for the purposes of blackmail. Shelley went on to create "Paparazzi Productions" and obtain footage of Sting, Christian Cage, and their respective families for the purposes of coercion. Shelley competed in the 2006 World X Cup Tournament as a member of Team USA's triumphant team. Although the World X Cup was in progress in May, Nash interviewed Kevin Nash, during which Nash revealed that the X Division was simply filler and that it was going to destroy the X Division. Shelley's inability for coverage created tension between his colleagues and himself, with Shelley eventually aligning himself with Nash after the tournament's conclusion.

Since then, the two performed several well-received comedy vignettes (some exclusive to YouTube), mainly focusing on Chris Sabin's feuds. Shelley helped Nash beat Sabin at Slammiversary. Shelley's predecessor had been ranked fifth in the X Division after being the second person eliminated in a six-man competition. Shelley said there were "ten guys, twenty guys" in a post-match interview with Nash, although some of them had knives. I believe I saw a few gats... guns." Shelley and Nash team up against Chris Sabin and Jay Lethal in a losing effort on July 16, 2006.

Shelley was recalled by Hard Justice in a match for the X Division Championship's number one seed. Shelley and Devine were pushed into the tag team division before losing in a Triple Chance Tag Team Battle Royal at No Surrender. Shelley was also present in Kevin Nash's Open Invitational X Division Battle Royal at Bound for Glory on October 22, 2006. He lost the match to Austin Starr.

Shelley recruited former Team Canada member Johnny Devine as a production assistant for Paparazzi Productions on June 29, 2006. The Paparazzi fired Devine later in life. Due to Kevin Nash's wishes, Devine was brought to dismay of Shelley by former Generation Next teammate Austin Starr. The three three of them appeared on several episodes of Impact backstage as a result of this. He gained the Paparazzi Championship Series, which he dominated at Final Resolution.

He would film two storyline attacks by The Latin American Xchange later this year (LAX). One on Brother Rays uncle and the other on Johnny Rodz. When he showed the video of the LAX beatingdown on Rodz, he was confronted by Brother Ray. The LAX attempted to assault Brother Ray before a fight could break out. When Ray had the upper hand, Kevin Nash distracted him, allowing Shelley to strike him with a low blow. Shelley helped LAX win the game by smashing Brother Devon with a video camera and giving him a Frog Splash through a table at Destination X 2007.

Shelley lost in a five-man Xscape match at Lockdown 2007. Jay Lethal pinned him down. The remaining two, Jay Lethal and Chris Sabin, were the remaining two survivors, with Sabin escaping the X Division Championship later.

Shelley formed a tag team in TNA in the summer of 2007 with Chris Sabin. Both Sabin and Shelley were involved in numerous independent promotions under the banners Murder City Machine Guns and The Motor City Machine Guns, both depicting Shelley's old tag teams, "The Sexy Time Machine Guns" and the fact that both Sabin and Shelley hail from Detroit, Michigan.

Shelley and Sabin launched a rivalry with Team 3D in October 2007, when the latter announced a war on the entire X Division and was eager to kill it off. Shelley and Sabin, as well as Jay Lethal, were able to defeat Team 3D and Johnny Devine in a Street Fight at Against All Odds to save the X Division and put an end to the feud. With the victory, Team 3D was compelled to shed their weight under 275 pounds if they wanted to keep competing for the company. Shelley then competed for Team TNA in the World X Cup alongside Kaz, the team's captain, his tag team member Chris Sabin, and Curry Man. Shelley and Sabin defeated Daivari and Tyson Dux of Team International in the first round of the tournament on June 19, giving Team TNA their first point. Team TNA was represented in the twelve-man, four-team elimination tag team tournament, held in Victory Road, Shelley, Sabin, and Curry Man. Shelley made it to the end of the match, allowing Team Japan to defeat Masato Yoshino and take the lead ahead of the tournament's final round, which will be fought between the team captains. Team TNA was defeated in the final round by Team Mexico, who won the 2008 World X Cup despite Shelley's efforts. Shelley and five other TNA wrestlers traveled to Mexico on July 25, 2008, a month later, in a sixteen-man torneo cibernetico match. Shelley won the Gran Prix, despite pinning ltimo Guerrero. Shelley, Sabin and Sonjay Dutt unsuccessfully challenged Guerrero, Atlantis, and Negro Casas for the CMLL World Trios Championship on September 19, triggering a match on September 19 at the 75th Anniversary Show on CMLL, where Shelley, Sabin, and Sonjay Dutt lost in a match on September 19th. Shelley and Sabin stepped into the role of tweeners after the tournaments, demonstrating contempt towards Christian Cage, A.J. Creed, B.G. Styles, Consequences Creed, B.G. The Xchange between James and the Latin American Xchange, however, has been greeted a great deal by the fans towards whom they did demonstrate reverence.

Shelley, Samoa Joe, A.J., made the news on October 30, 2008. Styles, Jay Lethal, Consequences, Petey Williams, Eric Young, ODB, and Chris Sabin all formed a group known as The Frontline to Battle (Munt Angle, Kevin Nash, Booker T and Scott Steiner) Shelley and Sabin demonstrated hostility toward both their stablemates and TNA executive shareholder Mick Foley, despite their friendship.

Shelley faced Sheik Abdul Bashir and Rhino in another three-way dance in which the winner will be awarded a check for $25,000 and the loser had to wear a turkey jacket. Rhino dominated the game, defeating Shelley after a Gore compelled him to wear the suit. Shelley then decided to take the action after Mick Foley threatened to sue him if he didn't. Shelley gave Foley a middle finger and was given a double arm DDT after putting on the turkey suit.

Shelley and Sabin competed in the Feast or Fired match in December 2008, but did not receive a trophy.

He defeated tag team partner Chris Sabin for his first stint as the X Division Champion at Genesis. He lost the Ultimate X match against Suicide in March 2009, which featured Jay Lethal, Consequences Creed, and Chris Sabin. Shelley, Sabin, Lethal, Creed, Suicide, and Suicide were all involved in the first X Division King of the Mountains contest, despite Shelley's struggles in regaining the title.

Shelley and Sabin were inactive after Slammiversary's inactivity, barely making television appearances. The Impact of the July 30 attacks is making a comeback! They could be seen in the crowd holding signs such as, "Conspiracy Victims" and "Yes, We Still Work Here." The pair interrupted Daniels' backstage interview ahead of their match with World Elite champion Eric Young on August 6 and promised to accompany him in order to get some television time.
