Early life

Raichlen was born in Nagoya, Japan,. He grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, United States.

Education

Raichlen received a Bachelor of Arts in French literature from Reed College in 1975. He was given a Thomas J. Watson Foundation Fellowship to study medieval cooking in Europe, and was given a Fulbright Scholarship to study comparative literature. He attended Le Cordon Bleu and La Varenne cooking schools in Paris.

Television career

On American Public Television, Raichlen created Barbecue University (aka BBQ U), which aired for four seasons from 2003 to 2006. He appeared on American Public Television from 2008 to 2010. Primal Grill concentrated on live fire cooking, using various grills for each technique. Project Smoke, he founded in 2015, concentrated on traditional and cutting-edge techniques in smoked food. Steven Raichlen's Project Fire was one of the most recent developments. On Zeste, Quebec, Raichlen also hosts Le Maitre du Grill and Les Incontourables du BBQ. On Gambero Rosso Channel in Italy in 2018, his Steven Raichlen Grills Italy show was unveiled.

On Japanese television, he battled and defeated Iron Chef Rokusaburo Michiba.

He has appeared on numerous television shows and networks, including Good Morning America, The Today Show, CBS This Morning, Oprah, Regis & Kelly, The View and CNN.
