The Cambridgeshire council is considering a ban on 500 mature trees in the orchard

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 21, 2023
Around 1,000 trees, as well as plums and pears, are grown in Coton Orchard, near Cambridge, and it is a designated habitat of primary importance. However, county councillors voted 33 to 26 in favour of the new bus-only route that will connect the university city and Cambourne, a rapidly growing new town eight miles away. Despite 2,300 protesters signing a petition and empassioned pleas at the full council meeting to reconsider the 'completely destructive' plan. Anna Gazeley, whose family owned the orchard, planted in 1922 to produce apples for wholesale trade in Covent Garden, told councillors: "Traditional orchards are hotspots of wildlife in the countryside, providing a diverse range of species as well as a number of nationally endangered and nationally endangered species.'
