Joshua Howard Luellen (born February 2, 1989), also known as Southside on da Track, is an American record producer, songwriter, and rapper.

Southside became well-known in the hip hop industry for releasing songs for well-known artists around the country's hip hop community.

Southside and Lex Luger, a 1017 label mate, established their first production and songwriting team 808 Mafia in 2010, where Southside now has the majority.

Luellen's stage name derives from the city where he grew up, Southside, Atlanta.

Early life

In Atlanta, Georgia, Southside grew up. He loved Little League Baseball growing up but then stopped playing the game after suffering a concussion after being struck in the head with a baseball. He started making beats when he was 14 years old, when he and his uncle got their first computer.

Southside Career

Career

Southside decided to pursue music as a viable career path right around his mid-teen years. He was later discovered by then unknown rapper Waka Flocka Flame when he was 17 years old, and Gucci Mane signed him to his label 1017 Brick Squad Records. Luellen met Lex Luger, who was another producer for Waka Flocka, at Bricksquad Records, and the two began collaborating together to lay the foundations for Waka Flocka's debut album.

"Fuck the Club Up," the song on Waka Flocka's debut album Flockaveli, was Southside's first major release. "Illest Motherfucker Alive" is Kanye West & Jay-Z's critically acclaimed album Watch the Throne, co-produced in 2011. This aided in his rise in fame and brought him right into the mainstream hip hop scene. He has since worked with artists including Rick Ross, B.O.B. Wale, Meek Mill, Lil Scrappy, MGK, and others.

Gucci Mane & Waka Flocka's joint album Ferrari Boyz appeared on Flocka's second album Triple F Life: Friends, Fans, and Families.

Southside's lead single from Pusha T's mixtape Wrath of Caine's in January 2013. On February 10, the song's music video was released. When producer Rico Beats was asked to rewrite Southside's instrumental for the final version of the song, it ignited controversy. Southside was unaware of the changes, which culminated in the two manufacturers exchanging threats on Twitter. Kanye West is listed as co-producer in Wrath of Caine's official track list, rather than Rico Beats. "Tap out" by Birdman on his album Rich Gang: Flashy Lifestyle was also released in 2013. By the RIAA, the song debuted at number 44 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was named Gold by The RIAA.

Southside's productions have been included on numerous mixtapes since the early 2010s. The single "Danny Glover" by Gucci Mane's protégé Young Thug, which was produced by Southside, made a hit in early 2014 alongside 808 Mafia's TM88. Southside's production soared into Atlanta's hip hop mainstream by late 2014, when Future's mixtape Monster went on to become one of the year's most well-known rap releases, though Southside handled a quarter of the mixtape's total production. More than a million total streams and downloads have been received on DatPiff's online mixtape website. In March 2015, the monster standout "Commas" was released as a commercial single and spent 20 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number 55, simultaneity receiving an RIAA gold certificate further cementing Southside's career boost.

Southside continued to push his trap music in the hip hop market in 2015, particularly on several songs produced by him and his 808 Mafia collective. Luellen was responsible for a significant portion of Future's DS2's album, as well as being responsible for nine of Future's ten tracks, in which Southside achieved the entire project's worth of beats in just one night. In addition, Southside was instrumental in the creation of three tracks on the joint mixtape What a Time to Be Alive by Future and Drake.
