Sonny Mayo (born July 16, 1971) is an American guitarist, songwriter, and music producer.
Career
In the late 1980s, Mayo formed Silence, a thrash metal band. Silence (John Mayes, Benjamin Gaither, Louie Denslow, Jason Robinson, and Sonny) regularly sold out venues in the Washington, D.C. metro area, including the "Bayou" in Georgetown. Alex Perialas, a producer, released a nine track album, Vision, and recorded a three-track tape with Silence (producer - Anthrax, Overkill, S.O.D.). "One Race," one of the tape's songs, was turned into a black and white video shot at the Bayou (note: John Brenkus, the video's producer, now works Sport Science on ESPN).
He later joined M.F. Shannon Larkin (Wrathchild America, Ugly Kid Joe, Amen, Now Godsmack) on vocals, Jamie Miller (Snot, Bad Religion, The Start) on drums, and John "Tumor" Fahnestock (Snot, Amen, Noise Within) on bass, Pitbulls with Shannon Larkin (Snot, Amen, Noise Within) on bass, and John "Tumor" Fahnestock (Snot, Amen, Noise Within) on bassist,
Mayo formed Mayo in 1995 and joined the band Snot in Santa Barbara. Snot was signed to Geffen Records in 1996 and was the first full-length album to be released in May 1997. Shannon Larkin was a member of Amen in 1998 and has since released songs on Roadrunner Records (Amen self-titled) and Virgin Records (We Have Come For Your Parents). Mayo was a contributor to the Vanilla Ice album Hard to Swallow in 1998.
Mayo replaced Chad Benekos in Hed PE in 2002. He toured in favor of the album Blackout.
After Clint Lowery left for Dark New Day on January 19, 2005, he got a call from Morgan Rose to join Sevendust. Mayo co-wrote and produced three full-length films with Sevendust. 2010 – Winedark Records, 2005; Alpha – Asylum Records, 2007; and Chapter 7: Hope & Sorrow – Asylum, 2008. Clint Lowery, the original Sevendust guitarist, had Mayo replaced him in early 2008. According to Mayo, he was not happy with the way he was fired.
Snot reformed with ex-Divine Heresy frontman Tommy Vext on vocals shortly after leaving Sevendust. In late 2008, Snot wrote and recorded new material and toured the United States to support Mudvayne. Mayo decided not to continue with Snot in May 2009 and enrolled in the Musicians Institute of Technology at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California. Mayo engineered and engineered numerous bands and artists after receiving a certificate in audio engineering and Pro Tools.
Mayo engineered and co-produced Ugly Kid Joe's Stairway to Hell in 2011 and rejoined the band in 2012 as a touring guitarist, filling in for Dave Fortman.
Sonny joined Wes Geer in June 2014, a non-profit group that utilizes music's healing ability by bringing musical instruments and equipment into treatment centers to write and record original songs with people recovering from heroin/alcohol misuse, PTSD, eating disorders, and other illnesses.
Sonny joined Ugly Kid Joe in the studio in June 2015 to write/record Uglier Than They Used ta Be, a book that was released in late 2015.
