Life and career
She was born in Walnut Creek, California, into an Orthodox Jewish and fourth-generation Deaf family, Ron Stern and Hedy Marilyn Stern's daughter (née Udkovich), and Lauran Stern, a former Gallaudet Men's Basketball Coach and current political scientist Brendan Stern. Both of her grandmothers are Holocaust survivors. Fremont, California, where she attended the California School for the Deaf, Fremont, is her hometown.
American Sign Language is Stern's first language. She is also able to read lips and speak English without an interpreter. Gallaudet University, the world's only liberal arts college for the Deaf.
On June 3, 2012, she married Ricky Mitchell, a New Mexico couple, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Their daughter was born in February 2015. She now lives with him in Hollywood, California.
