Squillaci returned to Monaco in 2002 and was active in the team that captured the Coupe de la Ligue in 2003. For the first time in his career, he competed in European competition, and he was a member of the Monaco team that qualified to the 2004 UEFA Champions League Finals. Squillaci was selected to the National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) Ligue 1 Team of the Year earlier this year. Squillaci began working with league rivals Olympique Lyonnais in 2006 and gained two consecutive league titles, as well as the Coupe de France in 2008, before moving to Spain in 2008. In his last season with Sevilla, he played in over 65 games and lifted the Copa del Rey. Sebastien Squillaci Career

Club career

Squillaci started playing for hometown club FC Seynois. He was described by his coach Franck Seva as a "lovely, quiet boy" while training at La Seyne. Squillaci spent a decade with the club before transferring to Toulon, a professional club, in 1996 at the age 16. He started as a defensive midfielder but spent only one season in the club's youth academy, where he was supervised by former club player Christian Dalger. Squillaci played on the club's reserve team from 1997-98. He was fired by Albert Emon mid-season and was sent to Dalger following his replacement. Dalger's uncle, Squillaci, was transferred to the first team in March 1998 and made his professional debut on March 7, 1998, beating Nice as a replacement for Victor Agali. Squillaci made replacement appearances in victories over Lille, Le Mans, and Lorient, as well as defeats to Martigues and Red Star Paris, with Toulon in a relegation contest. Toulon also finished the season in 20th place, resulting in the club's relegation to the Championnat National, the third level of French football. Squillaci had five appearances in the league and one in Coupe de France at the end of the season. In the latter competition, Toulon, surprisingly, advanced to the Round of 16.

Squillaci was allowed to leave the team on a free transfer due to not being under a professional deal while playing for Toulon. He was born in Monaco and joined the club in 1998. Squillaci was drafted into the club's reserve team, which was playing in the Championnat de France Amateur, the fourth level of French football, following his signing. He spent two years with the club's reserve team from 1998 to 2000, amassing over 45 appearances. Monaco officials announced that Squillaci would move to Corsica to join Ligue 2 club AC Ajaccio on loan after struggling to establish himself under Claude Puel. Squillaci appeared in over 70 games during his two seasons with the club and helped the club win promotion to Ligue 2.

Squillaci joined Monaco in 2002 after Puel's resignation and the naming of new manager Didier Deschamps. Monaco improved in his first full season as a player for his team in the 2003–04 UEFA Champions League, defeating Real Madrid 4–2 in Madrid; the team advanced to the quarterfinals on the away goals rule, where they defeated Chelsea. The team's campaign came to an end after losing 3–0 to FC Porto in the final. Over the course of six seasons, Squillaci made 217 appearances for the club.

Squillaci opted to play somewhere after Deschamps' departure and a disappointing 11th-place finish after years of European qualification. He was linked to many clubs before concluding a four-year contract with Lyon, with Sylvain Monsoreau heading the other direction as compensation to Monaco. In their first match of the Ligue 1 season season pairing with Brazilian center-back Cris, Squillaci made his debut in Lyon. Lyon will continue to dominate the season, winning the league by an incredible 18-point margin. Squillaci continued to develop himself as Lyon's first-choice center-back alongside Cris.

Lyon had reached an agreement with La Liga club Sevilla for the transfer of Squillaci for a €6.25 million transfer fee plus €500,000 in bonuses on July 14, 2008. Squillaci has decided to a three-year contract. Officials of Squillaci's former club Toulon announced that Sevilla was demanding €150,000 in compensation six months after he was fired from Sevilla in January 2011. Toulon's compensation was related to a legacy of coexistence, in which 5% of any future transfer fee was paid to the youth clubs that had recruited a player aged 12 to 23. Sevilla had agreed to speak with Toulon, but no agreement was reached at the time.

Squillaci joined Arsenal on a three-year deal in the summer of 2010, earning a fee estimated to be around £4 million. He wore the number 18 shirt, which had been held by former Arsenal center-backs Mikael Silvestre and Pascal Cygan. Squillaci and fellow new signing Laurent Koscielny formed a central defensive team following Thomas Vermaelen's injury. In the UEFA Champions League group stage against Partizan, Squillaci scored his first goal for Arsenal. From a Nicklas Bendtner cross, his first Premier League goal came against Stoke City on February 23, 2011. Squillaci made 28 appearances and scored 2 goals for the Gunners across all competitions during the 2011–11 season, including the League Cup Finals.

Squillaci's first season and the arrival of German international Per Mertesacker in the summer of 2011, the club's pecking order came down the order for the 2011-12 season. In the quarter-final loss to Manchester City, he made his first appearance of the season in the League Cup round victory over Bolton Wanderers and continued to be a member of the League Cup squad. On December 6, 2011, Arsenal's 3-2 loss to Olympiacos, Arsenal's final group stage match, was his first Champions League appearance of the season. On January 2, 2012, he made his first Premier League appearance of the season, when he substituted midfielder Aaron Ramsey for the last ten minutes against Fulham after center-back Johan Djourou was sent off. Arsenal lost the game 2–1 as Squillaci's clear header in the 92nd minute of the game fell to the feet of Bobby Zamora, who had scored a volley to give Fulham all three points. Squillaci came on as an early replacement in Arsenal's fifth round FA Cup match against Sunderland on February 17th, with regular defenders Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny also missing due to injury. Squillaci had a great game, deflecting Kieran Richardson's 40th minute shot into his own net, and was ultimately suspended due to injury in the 52nd minute as Arsenal lost 2–0. He finished the 2011–12 season with six appearances, with only one of these appearances being in the Premier League.

In a 2–1 loss to Olympiacos in the UEFA Champions League, Squillaci made his first appearance of the 2012–2013 season. Squillaci, as well as colleagues Anders Andrey Arshavin and Denlson, announced on June 5th, 2013 that Arsenal, Squillaci, and others, would leave the club when their contracts came to an end.

Squillaci was announced on July 17th as the Bastia's new number 5 on a one-year deal, with an optional extension of two years. He made his debut in the season's opener, a 2–0 loss to Nantes, and since being established in the starting 11 that helped the club win the top ten in Ligue 1, he's ranked in the top ten. In a 1–0 victory over Nice on October 26, 2013, he scored his first goal of the season from a header. In October 2016, he suffered a rupture of the cruciate ligaments in the right knee. Despite signing up for a new season with Bastia, he announced the end of his professional career in November 2017.

International career

Squillaci has been a member of France since 2004, making his debut in a friendly match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. He currently has 21 caps for France.

Squillaci has qualified for the non-FIFA affiliated team of Corsica twice, and has appeared in 2009 against Congo and 2012 against Bulgaria, both against Bulgaria and an international team coached by Gérard Houllier. He qualifies both his father and mother's Corsican roots.
