Sebastien Frey Career

Club career

Frey, a Frenchman who was born in Thonon-les-Bains, began his career with AS Cannes in 1997 at the age of 17. In a 1–1 home draw against Rennes on September 20, 1997, he made his professional league debut, playing as a starter. Frey made 24 league appearances and took home Grégory Wimbée's starting goalkeeping job in the first team at the end of the 1997–98 season.

Frey began attracting attention from abroad, particularly Inter Milan, who had been warned of his exceptional talents by former keeper Walter Zenga and Serie A rivals Juventus following two promising seasons at Cannes. He eventually joined Inter. He was the third goalkeeper at Inter Milan during Andrea Mazzantini and Gianluca Pagliuca until Mazzantini was sold to Perugia, making Frey the second choice goalkeeper. Frey made his Genoa debut against Genoa on March 21, 1999. Frey made an appearance against Sampdoria when he was put on instead of Pagliuca at 70 minutes on the score (and final) 4–0. He appeared in seven league appearances for Nerazzurri at the end of the season.

Frey left on loan to Verona, where he appeared in thirty league appearances and helped the team avoid relegation in the summer transfer window.

He went from loan to playing for Inter Inter Inter Inter Inter next year as the club sold Angelo Peruzzi for cash and Marco Ballotta. Frey was recalled at Inter Milan in light of his playing with Verona and Inter, and in the 2000–01 season, he was the youngest goalie in the Lombard team's history and the first foreigner to move from Inter to this position. He was also in the preliminary round of the Champions League. On rare occasions, his outstanding leadership, his maturity, and dedication to the club have made him the team captain. The team did however perform better than expected, and the club made several changes to the squad; after the arrival of Francesco Toldo from Fiorentina, Frey was put on the transfer list, the team's transfer list was updated.

Frey was compelled to find a new club following Toldo's transfer to Inter. He was transferred to Parma in the summer of 2001 for 8 billion lire cash plus Sérgio Conceiço (Conceiço was fined for 32 billion lire), or 40 billion lires with whom he defeated the 2001–02 Coppa Italia. Frey was the replacement for Gianluigi Buffon, who was sold to Juventus for a transfer fee of 100 billion lire in the same window. At the time, the transfer fee was the world's highest goalkeeper's transfer fee. Frey had a difficult time replacing Buffon.

Frey's time in Parma was positive, and he gave the club ample opportunity to demonstrate his abilities and demonstrate the trust placed in him. He was a key part of the squad and played regularly in the UEFA Cup. Frey won the Coppa Italia 2002-02 edition with Parma, winning the championship for the third time since 1992; however, Frey never participated in the tournament with Cláudio Taffarel selected for the final. Frey started in goal against Juventus in the 2002 Supercoppa Italiana, but he couldn't help his team prevent losing 2–1 to the league champions.

Parma avoided relegation to Serie B against Bologna in June 2005 thanks to Frey and his outstanding results. Frey had to be sold despite his transfer to the club, despite the latter's financial constraints. Frey came to Fiorentina for the 2005–06 season, following four seasons with Parma, as a student on a loan with the ability to be.

Frey stayed on loan with Fiorentina for the 2005–06 season and then agreed to a long-term deal with the club, including Cristian Brocchi, Stefano Fiore, and Luca Toni, all from Parma. On Monday, he and his team received a blow after a match in the Coppa Italia against Juventus, after a good start to the season, including Marcelo Zalayeta.

Frey suffered blunt injury to the tibia, which kept him out of the team's starting lineup for several months, prompting the club's sporting director Pantaleo Corvino to recruit another replacement, which turned out to be Romanian goalkeeper Bogdan Lobonț.

The Florentine authorities declared the outright purchase of Frey on May 15, 2006, in a sum equal to €6 million. Frey regained his starting position in goal in the new season after an initial physical injury due to a long absence of fitness.

Frey suffered a meniscus injury during training on December 13th and underwent knee surgery the next day. He returned to Fiorentina's 2–1 win over Parma on January 13, 2008, after being sidelined for a month, and his outstanding work was rewarded with a contract extension. Fiorentina reached the semifinals of the UEFA Cup for the first time this season.

Frey conceded less than a goal per game in the 2008–09 Serie A season, conceding only thirty-one goals in thirty-eight matches.

Frey suffered an Anterior cruciate ligament injury in preparation on November 2, 2010, putting him out for the remainder of the season.

Frey joined Genoa on a free transfer after falling out of favour with Fiorentina and being replaced by the newly signed Artur Boruc, who had joined the club from Celtic earlier this season. Genoa was backwards and never arrived in the relegation zone, causing the conversion to fail. Frey retired after 2 years and was replaced by Mattia Perin. Frey revealed talks with French spenders PSG ahead of Genoa's summer transfer window, but the capital team later acquired Palermo goalkeeper Salvatore Sirius instead. Frey also confirmed that German side Bayern Munich was keen to sign him.

Frey joined Bursaspor in Istanbul on July 15, 2013 for an undisclosed fee. Frey was banned from professional football after he failed to make an appearance during the 2014–15 season. On July 15, he posted an Instagram post on July 15, 2015, expressing his gratitude for his time with the club.

International career

Frey was given his first call up for France for a match against Poland in November 2004, but he did not turn up. He played in France's final UEFA Euro 2008 qualifier against Ukraine on November 21th. After he erred on Andriy Shevchenko's equalizing goal, the match came to a 2–2 draw. He was a member of France's Euro 2008 finals squad. Frey retired from international football on August 20, 2008, after being consistently overlooked by boss Raymond Domenech, despite his fine form for Fiorentina and constant calls for his appointment by the French media.
