Sam Johnstone Career

Club career

After being identified by club scout Colin Fairhurst, Johnstone joined Manchester United at an academy level from Euxton Villa. He was the first-choice goalkeeper in the academy in the 2010–11 season after sharing the duties with previous seasons.

As both of their first-choice goalkeepers were sidelined by illness, Johnstone joined Oldham Athletic on loan on July 26, 2011. After losing their first-choice goalkeeper Josh Lillis to a long-term injury, Johnstone joined Scunthorpe United on a one-month loan on September 9. He made his debut against Sheffield United in a 1–1 home draw the next day. During a training session on October 19, Johnstone dislocated his finger, prompting Scunthorpe to look for an emergency goalkeeper once more. Scunthorpe extended the loan until 9 December, which was then extended to ten January 2012.

Manchester United's Johnstone has decided to spend the remainder of the 2012-2013 season on loan to Walsall's in Manchester. In his first few games, he kept clean sheets and was first-choice goalkeeper during his loan. Johnstone was loaned to Yeovil Town in the Championship for a period of three months on August 17th. Johnstone made his debut in a 2–0 loss to Burnley on the same day, but later learned he had sustained a finger injury prior to his debut and returned to Manchester United for care.

Johnstone was loaned to Doncaster Rovers in the Championship zone for four weeks on January 31. With first-choice goalkeeper Ross Turnbull hospitalized, Johnstone made his debut against Middlesbrough on the following day. On April 4, Johnstone agreed to a loan extension until the end of the 2013–14 season. Johnstone joined Doncaster Rovers on loan, initially until January 2015.

On January 12, 2015, Johnstone joined Preston North End of League One, his hometown club, right before the 2014–15 season. Preston beat Swindon Town 4–0 at Wembley Stadium on May 25th and kept a clean sheet in the 2015 League One play-off Final. On Manchester United's pre-season tour of the United States in July 2015, Johnstone ranked second-choice goalkeeper ahead of Anders Lindegaard, covering for David de Gea until the Spaniard recovered from a knock. He started in the victories over Club América and San Jose Earthquakes (playing the entire game) and then went back as a second-half substitute against Barcelona in a 3–1 victory.

Johnstone was called on the bench bench alongside Sergio Romero for the first game of the season against Tottenham Hotspur after rumors of De Gea's transfer request Real Madrid caused him to be dropped from the Manchester United squad. Following the failure of De Gea's move, Johnstone failed to make the bench again in 2015.

After Sunderland recalled Jordan Pickford on the same day, he resigned for Preston on a first 28-day loan. In a 2–1 home win over Rotherham United on January 2, 2016, he made his first appearance of his second stint at Preston in his second stint.

Johnstone's deal with Manchester United was extended until June 2018.

On January 5, 2017, Johnstone joined Aston Villa on loan until the end of the 2016-17 season. In an FA Cup match against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane, he made his debut on January 8, 2017. He had more clean sheets in the Championship during this loan spell than every other goalkeeper. He returned to Aston Villa on a loan until the 2017-18 season ended in July 2017.

Johnstone agreed to a four-year deal with recently relegated Championship club West Bromwich Albion for a transfer fee that was reported by BBC Sport as a £6.5 million. In May 2019, he was part of the West Brom team that lost to Aston Villa in the EFL Championship play-off semi-finals on penalties. However, Sam Johnstone helped the club gain automatic promotion to the Premier League for the 2020–21 season. Despite some outrage from fans, Johnstone maintained his role as West Brom's first-choice goalkeeper and went on to have a fruitful season. Sam Johnstone made a string of 'world class' saves throughout the season, securing key points for the club on several occasions. Johnstone won a 1–1 draw for the club away from home of future Premier League Champions, Manchester City, on December 15, 2020. Johnstone was also strong against former Manchester United United and reigning champions Liverpool, winning 1–1 draws against both teams. His fine form culminated in three club awards at the end of the season, including Player of the Year, Player of the Year, and PFA Community Champion for his efforts off the field.

After a season with West Brom in the Championship, Johnstone decided to join Crystal Palace as a Bosman, with him competing with Vicente Guaita and Jack Butland for playing time.

International career

Johnstone was a member of England's triumphant under-17 squad at the 2010 European Under-17 Championships in the United Kingdom. In September 2010, he made his England under-19 team debut against Slovakia.

At the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup, he was selected in the 21-man squad for England under the age of 20. He made his England debut on June 23rd in England's first match of the tournament, a 2–2 draw with Iraq. He appeared in England's three matches at the tournament, but they were disqualified at the group level.

When Johnstone was drafted in the England senior squad for their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against San Marino, Albania, and Poland, he received his first call-up to the England senior team on March 18th. He was called in the 26-man squad for UEFA Euro 2020, alongside fellow goalkeepers Jordan Pickford and Dean Henderson, and made his debut on June 6th in England's final pre-tournament friendly, a 1–0 victory over Romania at the Riverside Stadium. Johnstone was named in the 26-man squad for the rescheduled UEFA Euro 2020 on June 1st.

Brentford 5-3 Wolves: Thomas Frank's side strike early again as Bees keep rivals winless thanks to SIX goals in the first half

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 5, 2024
AADAM PATEL AT THE GTECH COMMUNITY STADIUM: Having opened the scoring in the first minute of each of their last three Premier League matches, Thomas Frank 's side took a little longer to get going as they took the lead after just 76 seconds here. No side has ever scored four first-minute goals in a Premier League season but at this rate, Brentford will shatter that record. After ultimately dropping eight points in those three games however, they backed up their electric start with four goals in a scintillating first-half display to heap the pressure on Wolves and Gary O'Neil.

Wolves 1-2 Newcastle PLAYER RATINGS: Which Toon defender endured a torrid afternoon? Who HAS to be better? And which half-time subs made the difference?

AADAM PATEL AT MOLINEUX: A stunning strike from Harvey Barnes completed a remarkable comeback for Newcastle as they overcame Wolves 2-1 at Molineux. Barnes came on at the start of the second half but saved his biggest impact for the 80th minute when he cut infield from the left wing and unleashed a curling effort into the top right corner. The winger's goal came just five minutes after Fabian Schar scored the equaliser when he scored a long-range effort that took a cruel deflection off of Craig Dawson and beyond Sam Johnstone's reach.

Nottingham Forest 1-1 Wolves: Gary O'Neil's side claim their first point of the season as Jean-Ricner Bellegarde's wonderstrike cancels out Chris Wood's opener at the City Ground

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 31, 2024
NOTTINGHAM FOREST 1-1 WOLVES - TOM COLLOMOSSE AT THE CITY GROUND: When social media is ablaze with every detail of Raheem Sterling's move to Arsenal and Jadon Sancho's switch to Chelsea, a goalkeeper moving from Crystal Palace to Wolves hardly earns a second glance. Yet if forwards win you games, keepers stop you losing them, and Wolves have Sam Johnstone to thank for their first point of the Premier League season. He On his debut after joining Wolves for £10million, Johnstone made superb saves in either half from Morgan Gibbs-White - celebrating his first senior England call-up - and Chris Wood. Wood had put Nottingham Forest ahead after 10 minutes and though his strike was quickly cancelled out by a stunner from Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, the Forest centre-forward might have had a hat-trick.
