Gallagher was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Gallagher, a product of Epping Boys High School, spent his youth at Gladesville Spirit, the NSW Institute of Sport, and Manly United FC before being signed to the Sydney FC National Youth League team.
He was called into the senior Sydney FC team on January 8, 2010 as an injury replacement for Matthew Jurman, who was suspended from the rest of the season due to a fracture.
Gallagher had signed a senior deal with the Central Coast Mariners beginning with the 2010–11 season on March 19, 2010. He left the club in 2012 after making only 1 of a possible 61 appearances for the club.
Gallagher will debut the Melbourne Victory in 2012-2013, after signing a pre-contract with the A-League club in March. In just the 16th minute of the Victory's Round 8 match with the Western Sydney Wanderers at Parramatta Stadium, Gallagher was banned from bringing down Wanderers striker Dino Kresinger just outside the penalty area, effectively ending the Croatian's what was seen as a futile goal. Despite the fact that Kresinger had notably fouled Gallagher prior to Gallagher's arrest of him, the event occurred. Gallagher was banned from playing in the Victory's match against Perth Glory as a result of the red card.
Gallagher made his second and last appearance with the Victory in their Round 10 match against Adelaide United. Gallagher was issued a yellow card in the 79th minute of the match, a match in which the Victory eventually lost 4–2.
Gallagher, as well as colleagues Diogo Ferreira, Spase Dilevski, and Tando Velaphi were released by Melbourne Victory in April 2013, just after the 2012–13 A-League season came to an end. In his lone season with the club, he dropped out after playing only 2 games out of a possible 29.
After a fruitful trial period, Sam Gallagher signed with V-League Champions Hanoi T&T on a one-year deal on January 7, 2014. In the 2014 V League and AFC Cup, he will play for Hanoi T&T. Sam is the first Australian to play in both the Australian A-League and the Vietnamese V-League as a result of the contract. He is hoping to be the replacement for Cristiano Roland, T&T's former captain and defender who retired after the 2013 season. Gallagher said he was aware of the pressure and wished to do well replacing Cristiano.
Gallagher made his debut on January 11th when he came from the bench in the match against Becamex Bnh Dng, which T&T defeated 42-02. He lasted about 60 minutes and earned the trust of club manager Phan Thanh Hung. He was accepted into the starting XI for the first time a week later in the V-League second round against Hoa Lai F.C. And it's doing well. He made his second full start against Vissai Ninh F.C. T&T lost 1–3 in Hàng y on Sunday, with the player scoring an own goal on January 22nd.
Gallagher made his AFC Champions League debut four days earlier as T&T played the first-round qualifier against Pune, F.C. He scored a goal in India, his first goal for the Hanoian club ever.
Gallagher returned to Australia and re-signed with the Newcastle Jets in the 2014-15 A-League season. Gallagher was one of many players cut from the team at the end of the season after a tumultuous season in which the Jets finished last on the ladder.
Gallagher was picked up by Manly United halfway through the NSW NPL 1 season, defeating Rockdale City Suns by 4–0. In a 4–1 victory over Marconi Stallions, he scored his first goal for the team a few games later.
Gallagher made his English National League South debut in February 2017, against Hanworth Villa in a Middlesex Senior Cup match. He joined Metropolitan Police on a double registration with Hampton in August 2017.
