Jackson Alexander Irvine (born 7 March 1993) is an Australian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for English Championship club Hull City. Irvine has represented the Scotland national under-19 football team, but has since made his debut for the Australia national team.

Club career

Irvine was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, where he attended The Knox School. Find out more about him and where he competed for clubs in the Victorian League system. When growing up, Irvine encountered Curtis Good when "they were both ten years old and lived two minutes from each other, and grew up together." They also "ran cross countries together" and played for Knox City (in Melbourne) as juniors. In 2009, he received the Frankston Pines player of the Year award, marking his first season in senior football.

After a fruitful trial period, he signed with Celtic in December 2010. Irvine played for Celtic in the NextGen Series, a pan-European competition for youth teams, and he captained the Under 19-side that won the Scottish Youth Cup and Under-19 League that season. In 2010, 11-11, and 2012-13, Irvine also won the Youth Cup. In a 2–2 draw against Hibs, he made his Scottish Premier League debut on September 1, 2012. In addition to captained the club's new under-20 squad, he captained the club's new under-20 team on his first appearance.

Irvine joined Kilmarnock's Scottish Premiership side early in the 2013-14 season, following manager Allan Johnston's interest in the project.

Irvine made his debut in a 1–1 draw against St Mirren two days after signing for the club. Irvine continued to play in the starting eleven for the first time. Irvine defeated Ross County 2–0 on 19 October 2013, giving Johnston his first victory for the club since being bossed. Irvine was suspended for a second bookable offence in a 3–1 loss to St Johnstone just over a week later, on September 9th. Irvine's loan relationship with Kilmarnock was extended until the end of the season in January 2014.

Irvine was sent out on loan again on September 1, this time to Ross County. In a 2–1 home loss against Motherwell on September 13, he made his debut on September 13, 2014, defeating them 2–1. Ross County signed Irvine on a two-year contract with Celtic for a development fee on July 28, 2015.

Irvine joined Burton Albion in the English Championship for a reported fee of £330,000, with the club claiming they had broken their transfer record to sign him. He made his club debut against Bristol City on August 13th. Burton Albion defeated Sheffield 3–1. He scored his first goal three days later, helping Burton Albion beat Sheffield 3-1 on Wednesday 3–1. In his first six league games for the club, the club's first two goals came to an end. Irvine was named Burton's Player of the Year for 2016–17 after scoring ten goals in 43 games and assisting the club in avoiding relegation.

Irvine agreed to a three-year contract with Hull City on August 30. In a 5–0 away loss to Derby County on September 8, he made his club debut when he came off the bench after 70 minutes to replace Jon Toral. Irvine scored his first goal for the club on December 9th when he netted Hull's last goal in a 3–2 home victory over Brentford.

In June 2020, Hull City released Irvine.

Irvine joined Scottish Hibernian until the end of the 2020–21 season on January 12, 2021.

Irvine signed for German club FC St. Pauli on July 5, 2021.

International career

Irvine played for Scotland at the under-19 international level, but he announced in October 2011 that he was still interested in playing for Australia. Irvine was eligible to play for Scotland because his father was born in Aberdeen, but he reiterated his desire to play for his native Australia in September 2012. In a friendly match against Portugal on October 11, 2012, he made his Australian under-20 debut against the Portugal under 20 team.

Irvine received his first Australian senior national team call-up in September 2013 and was selected for two matches. Irvine made his debut in the 83rd minute as a replacement for Mile Jedinak in a 3–0 victory over Canada on October 15, 2013.

He was named in Australia's 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia in May 2018.
