Ron Asheton Life

Ronald Franklin Asheton (July 17, 1948 – c. January 6, 2009) was an American guitarist, bassist, and co-songwriter with the Stooges.

He, along with Pop and his brother, drummer Scott Asheton, and bassist Dave Alexander formed the Stooges.

Asheton, who was once ranked 29 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, is currently ranked 60.

Early life

Ronald Franklin Asheton was born in Washington, D.C., on July 17, 1948. He referred to his family as a lot of musical influence, and that his family was his first major musical influence. He was first given a violin by his mother, but he was given an accordion at age 5, which he used more often. He took up both guitar and bass at age ten, which eventually took up the bulk of his practice time and desire.

He described himself as a child different from others his age, as the overwhelming majority of children in his area were more interested in sports and physical fitness, while others were spending their time listening to music and playing on guitar and bass. The family moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, when he was 13 years old. Scott and his brother Scott attended Pioneer High School.

He appeared in various local bands, including the Prime Movers and The Chosen Few (briefly overlapping with James Williamson, later of the Stooges). He met Iggy Pop soon after and the Stooges, a hard rock band, formed shortly after. Ron, like his father, a Marine, had a keen interest in military history, with a tense yet apolitical obsession with amassing Nazi memorabilia.
