Rob McClanahan Career

Amateur and international career

McClanahan attended Mounds View High School and continued to play three seasons for the University of Minnesota, winning the 1979 NCAA national championship. McClanahan joined the US Olympic team on a full-time basis and scored 34 goals in 63 exhibition games after representing the United States at the 1979 World Championship tournament in Moscow. McClanahan's amateur career came to an end in 1980, when he scored five goals in seven games while assisting his country in winning the gold medal. He scored the winning goal in the gold medal game against Finland (where the United States came back to win 4–2) two days after the Soviets' historic victory over the Soviets.

McClanahan sustained a bruise on the upper thigh, leaving the US team short a second player on the roster only three days before the Olympics, while teammate Jack O'Callahan was injured during the exhibition game against the Soviet Union. During the intermission, McClanahan's now famous argument with Herb Brooks aided him to return to action and play through his injury, boosting his team's come-from-behind draw against Sweden that was crucial to winning gold medalists later in the tournament.

Professional career

McClanahan was ranked forty-ninth overall in the 1978 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres, but he didn't begin playing with the Sabres until 1980, shortly after the Olympics. His NHL career was comparatively short lived, considering that he was mainly used as a role player. He bounced between the NHL and the American Hockey League in 1983-1984, with the Tulsa Oilers, before completing his NHL career with the New York Rangers in 1984 (he also played for the Hartford Whales in 1981–82). McClanahan also served on Team USA at the 1981 Canada Cup during his military service.

Post-playing career

After retirement, McClanahan began his career with Morgan Stanley in 1985, before working for Bear Stearns and Piper Jaffray, where he was managing director. In March 2002, he joined ThinkEquity Partners in Minneapolis as Principal and became the company's Head of Trading.

He also was featured in American Dad!

The Bling's season 6 episode Return to the Bling.

McClanahan is currently the head coach of the Blake School boys varsity hockey team.
