Al Secord Career

Playing career

Secord was a member of Hamilton Fincups of the OHA in 1976, when the Memorial Cup champion team was named Hamilton Fincups.

In the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft, Secord was drafted 16th overall by the Boston Bruins. As a 20-year-old, he made the Bruins' roster, scoring 16 goals and adding seven assists. He scored in his first 18 games the following season, but in a trade for defenceman Mike O'Connell, he returned to the Chicago Blackhawks on December 18, 1980.

Secord spent the best years of his NHL career in Chicago. In 1981-1982, he scored 44 goals in 80 games. He was also suspended 303 minutes in penalties, making him the first player in NHL history to record 40 goals and 300 penalty minutes in a single season.

Secord played for 54 goals and 32 assists for a career-high 86 points in the NHL All-Star Game for the second straight season, but injuries began to take their toll. In 1983–84, he played just 14 games, and it took him two years to recover his scoring touch. Secord responded with a 40-goal campaign from 1985-87, but the Toronto Maple Leafs traded Secord to the Toronto Maple Leafs on September 3, 1987. Secord and Ed Olczyk returned to Toronto, while Rick Valiant, Steve Thomas, and defenseman Bob McGill went to Chicago.

Secord spent two seasons with the Maple Leafs and was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers midway through 1988-89 for a fifth-round draft pick made by 1989 that the Buffalo Sabres later used to draft defenceman Keith Carney.

Secord re-signed with Chicago as a free agent and completed his NHL career in 1990, scoring 14 times in 43 games. He played for hockey until 1994, when he rejoined the Chicago Wolves of the International Hockey League to play two seasons. He also played roller hockey with the Chicago Cheetahs for a season.

Secord played 766 games in his career, scoring 273 goals and 222 assists for 495 points and registering 2,093 career penalty minutes.
