Riyad Mahrez Life

Riyad Karim Mahrez (born 21 February 1991) is a professional footballer who plays for Manchester City and captains the Algerian national team. Mahrez began his career as a youth for French club AAS Sarcelles.

He became a professional in 2009 with Quimper, where he appeared for just one season before moving to Le Havre, where he spent three years with them, first for their reserve team and then becoming a first-team regular.

Mahrez joined Leicester City in January 2014 and helped them win the Championship and promotion to Premier League at the end of his first season.

He was the Algerian Footballer of the Year, PFA Players' Player of the Year, and a member of the Premier League PFA Team of the Year in 2015 as he helped Leicester City win the Premier League.

In his first season, he signed for Manchester City in 2018, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup. Mahrez, a French national footballer, made his international debut for Algeria in 2014 and represented them at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2015, 2017 and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, winning the second edition of the tournament.

In 2016, he was named CAF's African Footballer of the Year.

Early life

Mahrez was born in Sarcelles, France, to an Algerian father and a mother of Algerian and Moroccan descent. Ahmed's father, who was from Beni Snous, Tlemcen District, was a farmer. Mahrez would spend his holidays in Algeria as a child. Wissam Ben Yedder, one of his childhood friends, was among his football teammates.

Mahrez's father used to play football in Algeria. Mahrez's father died of a heart attack when he was fifteen years old. "I don't know if I'm getting more serious," he said, but me and my dad's funeral set things off. Well, maybe in my head.

Personal life

In 2015, Mahrez married Rita Johal in England. Their daughter was born later this year. The couple, who had two children at the time, were ordered to pay a former nanny more than £3,600 in unpaid wages in June 2019. After splitting from Johal, Mahrez was revealed in October 2020 that it is now in a partnership with model Taylor Ward. On June 20, 2021, they revealed their engagement. In July 2022, the couple had a daughter.

Mahrez is a virulent Muslim. He made the Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca in June 2017.

Mahrez lost hundreds of thousands of pounds in May 2020 after his penthouse apartment in Manchester was burgled.

Riyad Mahrez Career

Club career

Mahrez, who was often overlooked by teams due to his slender build, still has ball skills that caught his interest.

He joined AAS Sarcelles in 2004. He had a two-month trial at St Mirren, but decided against it due to the cold weather.

Mahrez made 22 appearances and scored two goals in his first season with AAS Sarcelles in 2009. He was a student at the University of Quimper when he was playing for Quimper. Mathias Pogba was his nickname.

He joined Le Havre in 2010 after being enticed by their youth system, receiving invitations from top French teams Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille. He started playing for Le Havre II, the team's reserve team, before going on to play 60 times and score 6 goals for the first team in French Ligue 2 from 2011 to 2014. He chastised Ligue 2 for what he saw as a reliance on defense and teams aiming for a goalless draw in every match.

Mahrez was playing for Le Havre, England Championship team, but Leicester City's scout Steve Walsh was instead impressed by Mahrez, who was concentrating on teammate Ryan Mendes, but was instead captivated by Mahrez. Mahrez had no idea of Leicester, whom he first assumed to be a rugby team. He was signed by Leicester City on a three-and-a-half-year deal worth around £450,000 on January 11, 2014. His friends and family members were initially suspicious of a move to English football due to its physical appearance, fearing that his style of play would be more appropriate to Spain.

Mahrez made his debut on January 25, 2014, in the 2–0 win over Middlesbrough as a replacement for fellow winger Lloyd Dyer. Leicester manager Nigel Pearson said in February 2014 that after making four substitute appearances, including scoring his first goal for the club and his 82nd-minute equalizer against local rivals Nottingham Forest, he was ready to play. Leicester finished the season as champions of the Championship, returning to the Premier League for the first time in ten years.

Mahrez scored his first goal in the Premier League on August 16, 2014, beating Burnley 2–2 for their first goal in the division. Mahrez was a member of Leicester's seven-match winning streak to prevent relegatement to the Football League. In a 2–0 victory over Southampton on May 9, he scored both goals and three assists in a season that ended with four goals and three assists from 30 appearances.

In August 2015, he began a new four-year contract with Leicester. Mahrez scored two goals in the season opener against Sunderland on August 8, 2015, a 4–2 home victory. Following "excellent form" that culminated in him scoring four goals in the first three games of the season, he was later referred to as the club's "match winner" by captain Wes Morgan.

Mahrez was nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month award after scoring four goals in the first four games of the 2015–16 season. He had scored seven goals in ten Premier League games by the end of November 3, 2015. Leicester defeated Swansea City 3–0 to move to the top of the Premier League on December 5th, making him the first Algerian to score a Premier League hat-trick. Mahrez and his midfield partners Marc Albrighton, N'Golo Kanté, and Danny Drinkwater were lauded for their role in Leicester's early season run of form, and Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri described Mahrez and forward Jamie Vardy as "priceless" ahead of the January transfer window.

Mahrez's transfer value was reported to have risen from £4.5 million to £30.1 million in January 2016, ranked as one of Europe's top 50 most valuable players. Mahrez's fame in his homeland led Leicester to over three times more Facebook followers in Algeria than in the United Kingdom. Fans from as far as Belgium flocked to Sarcelles, requiring the same haircut.

Mahrez was one of four Leicester players named in the PFA Team of the Year in April 2016, and he received the PFA Players' Player of the Year award later this month. He was the first African to be honoured. Mahrez became Algeria's first Algerian to win a Premier League medal when Leicester finished the season as champions.

In August 2016, he began a new four-year contract with Leicester. In October 2016, he was nominated for the Ballon d'Or, finishing seventh. In December 2016, he received the BBC African Footballer of the Year award. Mahrez did not have a good season, particularly because of Leicester's decline, but he did have a role in the team's first appearance in the Champions League's quarterfinals, scoring four goals and two assists. Mahrez played his 100th Premier League game against Watford on May 6, scoring in the process.

Mahrez revealed that he wanted to leave the team at the end of the 2016-17 season. Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger expressed his interest in signing Mahrez after the news, but Roma's Italian side Roma's attempt for Mahrez was rejected in July 2017. Despite the club's uncertain future, he spoke of his "focus" in August 2017. On the last day of the transfer window, Algeria's Football Federation reported on August 31 that it had allowed him to leave the national team and travel to Europe in order to complete his transfer to an interested club; this transfer did not take place. He requested a transfer away from the club in January 2018. Mahrez stopped attending Leicester training after a move to Manchester City fell through. Chris Sutton, a former footballer and commentator, had his behavior criticized. Mahrez was dismissive of the "untrue assumptions" surrounding his departure from the team and later thanked his colleagues for their help.

Mahrez's signing on a five-year deal was announced on 10 July 2018. Mahrez's transfer fee of £60 million made him the most expensive African footballer, as well as Manchester City's most costly signing and a record transfer fee paid to Leicester City. He said he wanted to win the Champions League with the club. On August 5, he made his debut as a starter as City defeated Chelsea 2–0 to win the 2018 FA Community Shield at Wembley Stadium. Mahrez scored a brace for the Citizens against Cardiff City in the first minute on September 22, 2018. It was his first goal with Manchester City.

Mahrez scored the only goal for Manchester City on a 1–0 away victory over Tottenham Hotspur on October 29, 2018. Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, the former owner of Leicester City's former team, who had recently died in a helicopter crash, devoted the goal to him. Mahrez won the EFL Cup against Chelsea on February 24, 2019, his second title with Manchester City, as well as the best player of the EFL Cup, although he did not qualify for the final.

Mahrez won the Premier League championship for the second time and first with Manchester City, becoming the second African player to win the title with two different clubs since Kolo Touré. Despite his lack of game time, Mahrez said he would not leave City because he knew his first season would be difficult, and he wanted to a strong team with good players but trusted his potential. He won his fourth title of the season after beating Watford 6–0, becoming the first African player to win an English domestic treble, a week after losing the 2018–19 EFL Cup and the 2018–19 Premier League.

Mahrez skipped the 2019 FA Community Shield due to questions regarding medicine provided by the Algerian national team in August. It was described as a "non-event" by the Algerian FA. Mahrez got off to a winning start in Manchester City's 5–0 victory over West Ham United on day five, scoring five goals, two assists for hat-trick scorer Raheem Sterling, and winning a penalty for Sergio Agüero to eventually score after a retake.

Mahrez scored his first hat-trick for City in a 5–0 home league victory over Burnley on November 28, 2020. Mahrez scored both goals in a 2–0 home victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals on May 4, 2021, and he led City to a first European Cup final for the first time in the club's history.

Manchester City announced on July 15, 2022, that Mahrez had signed a two-year contract extension, which will see him remain with the team until 2025.

International career

In November 2013, the French-born Mahrez expressed his desire to represent Algeria internationally. He was called up to the provisional Algeria squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Mahrez made his international debut for the Desert Foxes as a starter in a pre-World Cup friendly match against Armenia on May 31, 2014, and he was then called up to the full squad for the tournament on June 2nd. His inclusion in Algerian media had sparked questions, and he had paid manager Vahid Halilhodi to have a spot in the team. Mahrez played in the first group match against Belgium but was then suspended for the remainder of the tournament, in which Algeria reached the final 16 on March 16.

Mahrez scored his first international goal and set up Islam Slimani in Algeria's 3–0 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Malawi on October 15, 2014. For the first time, he was named as a member of Algeria's squad for the final tournament in Equatorial Guinea in December 2014. His first match was against South Africa, where he appeared in the 60 minutes before the change to Ghana substitute in the last 20 minutes, where the Algerian team was defeated by a single goal in the last 20 minutes against Senegal led Mahrez the national team to the quarter-finals, scoring the first goal of a match ending 2–0. El Arabi Hillel Soudani's aides were not enough to disqualify from the quarter-finals 3–1. Mahrez was also in the second round of the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Tanzania, where he scored a goal and assists for Carl Medjani.

Mahrez was selected in coach Georges Leekens' Algeria squad for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon. He scored both goals in a 2–2 draw with Zimbabwe in their first game and was named Man of the Match.

Mahrez and his (at the time) Leicester teammate Islam Slimani were dropped from the national team in October 2017, with coach Lucas Alcaraz selecting several new names. Mahrez scored a brace in a 4–1 away victory over Togo on November 18, his first goal with the national team since the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations was to lead Algeria to qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

He was named in May 2019 to Algeria's 23-man team for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. Mahrez was chosen to be the captain of Algeria by coach Djamel Belmadi. Mahrez scored a 90+5 minute goal in a 2–1 win over Nigeria in the semi-finals of the competition. Algeria won the tournament, their first since 1990, and it was their first since 1990.

Mahrez captained Algeria at the postponed 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which was held in January 2022.

Riyad Mahrez denies team-mate Ivan Toney the perfect chance to score his first Al-Ahli goal as he insists on taking a penalty over the spot-kick specialist - before having his effort SAVED!

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 17, 2024
The England international, who joined the Saudi Pro League side for £40million over the summer, looked to have the chance to open up his account when a penalty was awarded to his side in their AFC Champions League clash with Persepolis. Given Toney's incredible penalty record, it was expected that the former Brentford striker would step up. However, he was snubbed in favour of former Manchester City star and new team-mate Mahrez.
