Early life and education
Budig was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the niece of Mary Jo Jo, a homemaker, and George Budig, a businessman. She was born in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. She graduated from the Cincinnati Public Schools School for Performing Arts (SCPA) in Cincinnati, Ohio, and later moved on to a major in zoology at Miami University. Budig went to Los Angeles, California, in 1993 to pursue an acting career. Howard Fine and Jay Goldenberg, acting consultants, began training with her mentors Howard Fine and Jay Goldenberg at the Howard Fine Acting Studio and at the Young Actors Space, respectively.

Budig is the youngest of eight children. She has five sisters and two brothers. Budig married Dr. Daniel Geller in 2000, but the relationship only lasted a few months.
When hosting the Bachelor repeat shows on ABC Family, she met former Bachelor actor Bob Guiney. On July 3, 2004, the two were married. Budig and Guiney had decided to separate, according to People magazine on January 13, 2010, with Budig filing for divorce in April 2010.
