Ray Panthaki (born 20 January 1979) is a British actor, producer, writer and director.
Early life
Panthaki was born in London to second-generation Indian parents. His parents belong to India's Parsi minority community.
Career
Panthaki is best known for his appearances in ITV and Netflix Original Series Away alongside Hilary Swank and as Hassan B in Sacha Baron Cohen's Ali G Indahouse. He appeared in the films Colette (2018 film), Boiling Point, Provoked, and It's a Wonderful Afterlife and the 2006 film Kidulthood, which he also produced.
At the TMA Theatre Awards in 2006, he was selected for "Best Support Actor in a Play" for his role in Gladiator Games. He formed Urban Way, a London-based production company later this year. Panthaki made his West End debut in the play In My Name at the Trafalgar Studios in July 2008. In Where We Live by Christopher Shinn and The Westbridge by Rachel De-Lehay, he appeared twice at the Royal Court Theatre in London. He went on to appear in The Empress of Tanika Gupta, directed by Emma Rice.
Panthaki's debut Life Sentence, a film that also wrote, received Best UK Short at the East End Film Festival in 2013. Panthaki produced and appeared in the comedy film Convenience, starring Vicky McClure and Adeel Akhtar. Keri Collins, the film's producer, received the coveted 'Best Breakthrough' award at the 2014 BAFTA Cymru for his contribution to the film. In 2014, he was named one of 18 BAFTA 'Breakthrough Brits,' a celebration of Britain's stars of tomorrow starring fellow actors Stacy Martin, Katie Leung, and Callum Turner. Panthaki was first seen as DCI Rav Sangha in Hans Rosenfeldt's Nordic noir detective series Marcella in 2016. Panthaki had signed to Wash Westmoreland's Colette, alongside Keira Knightley and Dominic West to perform live-life French writer Pierre Veber in the biopic based on French novelist Sidonie Colette. Panthaki appeared in the world premiere at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival with co-stars Keira Knightley and Dominic West, where the film received raves.
Panthaki appeared in Netflix Original series Away alongside Hilary Swank as Group Captain Ram Arya, second in command on a mission to Mars in 2020.
