Andrew Buchan (born 19 February 1979) is an English stage and television actor known for his appearances in the BBC political drama Party Animals (2013–17), as Mark Latimer in the BBC drama series Animals (2004), as John Mercer in ITV's ABC drama series The Fixer (2008–09), and as William Garrow in BBC period drama Garrow's Law (2009–11).

Early life

Buchan was born in Stockport and grew up in Bolton's suburb of Lostock. He attended Rivington and Blackrod High School, where he was the head boy at sixth form years in Horwich.

He worked for Granada Studios as a tour guide throughout A-Levels and long before his acting career, teaching tourists how amusing, unconventional ways to keep visitors interested. He served as a barman at Manchester Airport, as a concierge, at the De Vere Whites hotel in Reebok Stadium, and as a labourer for many months in Italy.

He graduated from St Cuthbert's Society, Durham University, in 2001, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Modern Languages. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).

Personal life

On September 8, 2012, Buchan married actress Amy Nuttall, not far from their respective childhood homes in Lancashire, England. Since 2007, the two couples have been together. Buchan revealed in January 2015 that the couple was expecting their first child.

He has appeared on stage as Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester, 2005. He appeared in Arthur Miller's book The Man Who Had All the Luck at The Donmar in 2008. The performance lasted six weeks in London before heading to a short UK tour. In a touring performance, Andrew was named Best Actor in a Manchester Evening News Theatre Award for Best Actor. He returned to The Donmar Warehouse in 2011-2012 to play Bolingbroke in Shakespeare's Richard II.

In 2006 Jane Eyre and later as the main character in the political drama Party Animals' Steven Foster, his career in television began as the vicar, St. John Rivers, and then as Scott Foster alongside Matt Smith. In 2007, Jem Hearne appeared in the award-winning Cranford, alongside Judi Dench, Imelda Staunton, and Eileen Atkins. He appeared as the tutor 'Sean Knowles' in ITV's The Whistleblowers' in 2007. He appeared in Season 4, Episode 1 of Bones in 2008 as Dr. Ian Wexler.

He appeared in The Fixer's ITV1 drama in 2008 and 2009 as the lead role, John Mercer, a paid assassination attempt aimed at people who have violated the rules. The first season of The Fixer received a Royal Television Society Award for Best Series.

He appeared as Fishwick in the John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy, opposite Kristin Scott Thomas and directed by Sam Taylor-Wood in 2009.

William Garrow appeared in the leading role in the BBC's Garrow's Law. On November 1, 2009, BBC One began on November 1st and went on for two more seasons.

He appeared in the BBC's two-part Cranford Christmas Special in December 2009.

In 2010, Buchan appeared as journalist and love interest Billy Marshall in the made-for-TV film Abroad, based in part on Leah McLaren's Globe and Mail columnist and author's real-life experiences. Andrew, co-star Jodie Whittaker, was invited to address a television BAFTA at the awards ceremony in May 2013. Having You, his film, premiered on Sky Movies in the same month. Buchan played Jack, alongside Romola Garai as his wife, and Anna Friel as a one-night stand from his time in this bittersweet comedy about commitment and responsibility.

Andrew Marsan appeared in Still Life, a multi-award-winning independent film, in which Andrew appeared alongside Eddie Marsan in a cameo role. Later this year, Buchan produced and appeared in a film short, 1946, based on the life of Hollywood actor Jimmy Stewart. At the 2014 Williamsburg Independent Film Festival, the film received the Award of Distinction.

Andrew Williams, the father of the kidnapped boy, son of JPG, and husband to Gail Getty, played by Michelle Williams, played John Paul Getty II. When Christopher Plummer replaced the disgraced Kevin Spacey as JPG just one month before, several of Andrew's scenes had been re-shotted.

Andrew was seen in a cameo role in James Marsh's The Mercy, a BBC film starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz in the lead roles. He was seen as Henri Matisse in National Geographic's 2nd season series Genius: Picasso later this year, along with Antonio Banderas and Clémence Poésy. Andrew Parker-Bowles, a friend and a rival of royal family members, appeared in The Crown's third season in 2019. He remained in his role in the fourth series, which ended filming in March 2020. In addition, Andrew appeared in two films: Intrigo: Samaria starring Phoebe Fox and Millie Brady and Baghdad in My Shadow, a Swiss/Iraqi filmmaker Samir alongside Zahraa Ghandour.

Buchan has a lengthy voice acting portfolio in addition to stage, television, and film.
