Early life
Gathegi was born in Nairobi, Kenya, and he grew up in Albany, California, United States Gathegi, where he played basketball until his career was ended due to a knee injury. Gathegi also started taking acting lessons. He then attended the Tisch School of the Arts' Graduate Acting Program, graduating in 2005. Gathegi's career began in theatre, and his stage appearances include Two Trains Running at the Old Globe Theatre, As You Like It, Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Cyrano de Bergerac.

Career
In the 2006 film Crank, Gathegi's first professional appearance was the Haitian Cabbie. Despite the fact that he had trained for the role of Kaylo, the producers gave Efren Ramirez the opportunity to play the role of the Haitian Cabbie instead, giving Gathegi an appearance as the Haitian Cabbie. He was skeptical at first about speaking in a Haitian accent, but he was coached by a Haitian friend. Gathegi, who appeared on Lincoln Heights and Veronica Mars, went on to play Bodie in Death Sentence and Cheese in Gone Baby Gone in 2007.
