Personal life
Ramanayake was born in Negombo on March 11, 1963. He is the youngest in the family of two children, son of Simon Alphonsu, the Sri Lanka Railways Department's District Inspector. In honor of filmmaker Somaratne Ramanayake, who assisted him in establishing his film career as the lead actor, he added the word 'Ramanayake' to his name.
He appeared in the GCE A/L exam again in August 2019 to pursue his later work as an advocate. On December 27, 2019, he went viral on social media as he announced his A/L findings (2S & 1F). Despite failing in Christianity, he later qualified to study law after receiving a General English and S passes for Political Science and Communication media research.
Cinema career
Ramanayake's first role was in the commercial film Jaya Kothenada, but his first film, Christhu Charithaya, was shot in a packed theatre and maintained his fame as a commercial film star throughout the 1990s. Ramanayake has occasionally branched out into more mainstream roles, such as in Lester James Perkins' Awaragira, but he's still is best known for his corporate roles. For the film Hima Gira, he received the Sarasaviya Award in 1998 for the Best Upcoming Actor. He performed in Sarasaviya Festival from 2002 to 2016, on a record 14 times.
He has progressively taken over his commercial film roles on the hit Parliament Jokes, One Shot and Leader, as a producer and screenwriter on these films, destroying box office records and becoming one of the most influential leading actors and directors of Sinhala cinema.
