Acting career

Sarathkumar made his acting debut in 1986 in the Telugu film Samajamlo Sthree at the behest of a producer friend. Sarathkumar was supposed to be the lead role in Chinna Poove Mella Pesu (1987) directed by Robert–Rajasekar, but the producers refused to have one familiar face and Prabhu was swapped by actor Prabhu. Sarathkumar, who was running his travel business in Chennai in 1988, had the opportunity to act as well as produce in the Tamil film Kan Simittum Neram. Kannadasan directed the film, and he co-starred with Karthik and Ambika. R. Sarathkumar was first noticed by Raju, actor Vijayanth's personal make-up man, who recommended him to the Pulan Visaranai team in 1989. R. Sarathkumar acted as a villain in Pulan Visaranai's final film, and it turned out to be a blockbuster. He received the Cinema Express Award for Best Villain for his part, which earned him more film opportunities. Mr. Karthik, a 1990 film that failed at the box office, he teamed up with Kannadasan for the second time. Puriyaadha Pudhir was the first collaboration between Sarathkumar and director K. S. Ravikumar. He was also active in his first attempt as a hero in Palaivana Paravaya under Senthilnathan's leadership, who at the time gave consecutive hits. He appeared in twelve Tamil films and three Telugu films in 1991, mainly in supporting roles and four films in lead roles, but he continued to appear in few films as a villain. In 1991, he appeared in negative roles in Stuartpuram Police Station, starring Chiranjeevi and Vijayashanti, Namma Ooru Mariamma, Vetri Padigal, and Pudhu Manithan. In Chithirai Pookkal, he served as a former military officer and appeared in the second hero role in the blockbuster film Captain Prabhakaran. He appeared in lead roles in Senthilnathan's Kaaval Nilayam and K. S. Ravikumar's rural drama film Cheran Pandiyan, as Chiranjeevi's brother in the Telugu film Gang Leader in May 1991 and was a commercially successful.

He appeared in Archana IAS, co-starring Sithara, and appeared in the role of the father, Vaidehi Kalyanam, in July 1991. He appeared in a small part in Surya IPS, a negative role in Pavithran's Vasanthakala Paravai, and appeared in a lead role in Senthinathan's Thangachi at the end of 1991.

He has appeared in ten films as protagonist and two films as antagonist, including the Telugu film Agreement starring Manivannan and P. C. S. S. S. Meera in 1992. He appeared in Senthilnasan's Ilavarasan in the beginning of 1992, as well as Sukanya's Periya Gounder Ponnu and Sivantha Malar, according to Sukanya. He appeared in Oor Mariyadhai, co-starring Sasikala and Senthilnathan's Idhuthanda Sattam in mid-1992. He starred in Suriyan, directed by Pavithran, and it was his first big break. The film received rave reviews and became a hit at the box office,; he was nominated for the role in which he shaved his head. Sarathkumar's fan base had increased exponentially, and he became more selective in accepting new assignments as a result. He was soon in battle with "Puratchi Kalaignar" Vijayakanth. He appeared in Thai Mozhi, co-starring Vijayakanth and Mohini, Ellaichami, Manoj Kumar's Samundi and Senthilna Nayagan, making their fifth and final collaboration in 1992. Despite mixed reviews, Thai Mozhi was released to mixed feedback, and Samundi, who had been unpopular reviews, survived for more than 100 days. He appeared in Aadhityan, co-starring Sukanya and Pandiarajan, as well as in Dasarathan, which was produced by Mani Ratnam and S. Sriram in 1993. Aadhityan's reviews were mostly critical, though the much-anticipated Dasarathan failed at the box office.

He appeared in Suresh Krissna's Vedan, co-starring Khushbu, in Munarivippu, and in his fourth collaboration with director K. S. Ravikumar; Bandmaster, with Heera Rajagopal and Ranjitha. T. Vijayan) for the second time in I Love India and appeared in the comedy film Kattabomman. Moondravadhu Kann was a hit at the box office, and Kattabomman was branded a "disaster," but Malini Mannath of The New Indian Express wrote, "Sarath seems to have improved on his expressions." On its release, Idhayam Ullavan was dubbed into Tamil and received mainly critical feedback. Malini Mannath sluggishly criticized his scripts and films. Sarathkumar could not take the lead role in Shankar's Gentleman this year because he was occupied with other projects and was subsequently replaced by Arjun Sarja. The film turned out to be a blockbuster, and Sarathkumar missed the opportunity to solidify his position.

He appeared in Aranmanai Kaavalan and in the bilingual Tamil/Telugu film Captain, directed by Kodi Ramakrishna, beginning in 1994. Aranmanai Kaavalan was released to glowing reports, but Captain Aranmanai Kavalan was given mainly critical feedback and fell short at the box office, earning him little respect. In mid-1994, he appeared in Namma Annachi and in Manoj Kumar's masala film Raja Pandi, as himself, and he appeared in a guest role in Pavithran's film Indhu. Namma Annachi and Rajapandi were granted unfavourable reviews. "To do all three roles is just to get more publicity for Sarath and the film," K. Vijiyan of New Straits Times wrote for Namma Annachi. His next venture was K. S. Ravikumar's Nattamai, alongside Meena and Khushbu, in which he appeared in both roles. The film became a blockbuster and attained cult status. Critics and journalists alike lauded his work, but others also flocked him numerous prestigious awards, including the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor and Cinema Express Award for Best Actor and Best Actor. It was followed by Magudikkaran, who appeared in a guest appearance. R. Sarathkumar decided to concentrate solely on Tamil cinema following Captain Jack's demise and Nattamai's triumph. He worked in the village drama Veluchami, P. Vasu's Coolie, Nadodi Mannan, and the crime film Ragasiya Police for the next year. "Sarathkumar shows more maturity in his acting," Veluchami said in a positive review by K. Vijiyan of New Straits Times. The four films were commercial flops. He appeared in A. Venkatesh's first film Mahaprabhu in 1996. The film turned out to be a hit. He starred in the action film Nethaji alongside Lisa Ray; the film was a failure at the box office.

He appeared in Aravindhan in 1997, co-starring R. Parthiepan, Nagma, and Urvashi. At the box office, the film was not successful. Suryavamsam, his new venture, was directed by Vikraman and directed by R. B. Choudary, was a blockbuster. In the film, he appeared in two parts. For the second time, he was nominated for Best Actor in Tamil and Cinema Express Awards for Best Actor. He appeared in the Sundar C. comedy film Janakiraman, which was a commercial success at the time. He appeared in Moovendhar next year, under the supervision of Suraj, Sundar C's assistant director. The film, which attracted skepticism, has failed at the box office. After Nattamai, he rejoined K. S. Ravikumar in Natpukkaga and proved to be a blockbuster. For the third time, R. Sarathkumar was named Best Actor in Filmfare and Best Actor at the Tamil Nadu State Film Award, as well as the Best Actor Award for the second time. He made a cameo appearance in Unnidai Koduthen, a Ukrainian republic. He appeared in the Telugu film Preminchanu Nene and in Simmarasi, directed by Erode Soundar, K. S. Ravikumar's former dialogue writer. Simmarasi received poor feedback, but Sarathkumar was lauded for his work. In the beginning of 1999, he appeared in R. Chandra's Chinna Durai, co-starring Roja. Sarathkumar partnered with Pooja Batra and met with director Suresh Krissna for the second time. Sarathkumar's performance was lauded by Usha Gopalakrishnan of indolink.com. He served in K. S. Ravikumar's Paattali at the end of 1999.

He appeared in Super Good Films, Maayi, in 2000, and made a guest appearance in Pennin Manathai Thottu. Despite the uproar, Maayi's box office was nonetheless profitable, with a reviewer stating that Sarathkumar "in the title role of a wholly underplayed character, certainly makes a difference." He appeared in Rishi's adventure film Rishi and went on to appear as himself in Ullam Kollai Poguthae, which was directed by Rajakumaran and produced by R. B. Choudary. The film was released after many difficulties and eventually failed at the box office. He appeared in S. A. Chandrasekhar's Dosth from 2004. K. S. Ravikumar's family feud Samudhiram was his next film; he appeared with Murali and Manoj Bharathiraja. Despite poor reviews, the film was a commercial hit. He appeared in Thenkasi Pattanam, alongside Napoleon and Samasthanam, and Suresh Gopi, a Malayalam actor, for two years. Arasu, directed by Suresh, was Sarathkumar's first film release in 2003, and the film did well at the box office. However, his second film Paarai, a remake of the Malayalam film Mahayanam directed by K. S. Ravikumar, was an average grosser. Suryaprakash, who previously produced the hit Maayi, was his third film. Critics lauded his achievements. He appeared in the action films Chatrapathy and Gambeeram at the start of 2004; both were average grossers. Maanasthan has been in the making for five years, and has received average reviews. His next venture, A. Venkatesh's hit film Namitha and Vadivelu, an action masala film, was a good success. He was also introduced in Aai as a playback artist.

He appeared in Hari's Ayya in 2005, as he and newcomer Nayanthara. The film was released on the weekend of Pongal to rave reviews and was a hit at the box office. Sarathkumar's performance received rave reviews, with a reviewer quoting "another outstanding performance from Sarathkumar." He appeared in guest appearances in Bunny and his wife's film Githan. Due to A. Venkatesh's success in Aai, the film's team began collaborating to produce Chanakya, which also featured Namitha and Vadivelu. The film was a big success at the box office, and it was the third time the A. Venkatesh and Sarathkumar combo was a hit in a row. He registered for Khaki, and the shooting was ongoing. Sarathkumar had even snsured his head for the film, but the movie was not released for some reason.

In 2006, he starred and appeared in his 100th film Thalaimagan, directed by his wife Raadhika under the "Radaan Media works" banner. The film at the box office failed. He appeared in Gautham Vasudev Menon's Pachaikili Muthucharam, which received rave feedback, but he ended up as an average grosser next year. Sarathkumar has excelled as a next-door family man," a critic wrote. Sarathkumar has starred in Valianteeswaran, a 1977 Malayalam film directed by K. S. Ravikumar, a Sarathkumar film directed by K. S. Ravikumar, in a Malayalam film. In Cheran's Maya Kannadi, he appeared as himself. Nam Naadu, a remake of the Malayalam hit Lion, was Sarathkumar's third collaboration with director Suresh, marking his third collaboration with director Suresh. This was his first film after he formed his own political party in Tamil Nadu. The film, which attracted mainly critical reviews, did not do well at the box office. Vainswaran's only film in 2008 was released in 2008, he was forced to receive critical feedback.

He appeared in the film 1977, doing six different looks at the start of 2009. G. N. Dinesh Kumar, a newcomer, produced and directed the film, which was made with a whopping budget of 15 crores. The film, which was released to critical reviews, had an average opening and was officially declared a flop at the box office. Sarathkumar made his Malayalam debut in 2009 through Pazhassi Raja, in which he co-starred with Mammootty and played Edachena Kunkan. Hariharan produced the historical period film. Sarathkumar received the Vanitha Film Awards for Best Supporting Actor for her film. Sarathkumar was overwhelmed with offers in Malayalam after the announcement of Pazhassi Raja. On January 29, 2010, Jagbhai's film, directed by K. S. Ravikumar, became the tenth joint venture between the director and actor. The film, which was having serious piracy issues before its introduction, was eventually destroyed at the box office. He made a guest appearance in Kola Kolaya Mundhirika, Madhumitha's comedy film. He appeared in the Malayalam film Oridathoru Postman, which was a failure at the box office at the time. In early 2010, he appeared in his first Malayalam film, The Metro, as a solo hero, which bombed at the Kerala box office. Both Tamil and Telugu received the Golden Eagle Award for Best Supporting Actor, and the film was a hit in both Tamil and Telugu.

In the Kannada film Myna, he played the role of a police officer next year. He returned to Chennaiyil Oru Naal, a remake of the Malayalam hit film Traffic and co-produced by his wife Raadhika Sarathkumar, in which he played the role of a traffic police commissioner. The film became a critical and commercial hit. He appeared in the Telugu film Chandee later in the role of a police officer. He played the part of a CBI officer in Nimirndhu Nil and Janda Pai Kapiraju, which were fired simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu at the start of 2014. He appeared in "India's first photorealistic performance capture film" Kochadaiyaan, co-starring Rajinikanth and Deepika Padukone. The film is accompanied by a Malayalam film, Asha Black, and Nee Naan Nizhal is a film that was simultaneously released in Tamil as Nee Naan Nizhal.

In 2015, he appeared in a Cameo directed by S. Shankar, and his next Sandamarutham in two roles, directed by A. He made his comeback to Tamil cinema as the lead in the film Chennaiyil Oru Naal 2 (2017), a spirit sequel to the 2013 Chennaiyil Oru Naal. "Sarathkumar is the only saving grace, he looks flawless as a stylish police officer, and the actor is the primary reason to watch the film until the end," a writer tells sify.com. "This is a position in which he can do in his sleep," the Hindu press writes. He's fine, but the majority of cast, including Napoleon and Suhasini Maniratnam, has nothing to offer, owing to poor writing." The film received mainly critical feedback when it was released. In 2018, he appeared in a number of Telugu action films including Naa Peru Surya, Naa Illu India, Bharat Ane Nenu, Saakshyam, and Devadas.

Political career

R. Sarathkumar was regarded as close to All India's Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) supremo Jayalalithaa in his early days as an actor. However, Sarath's closeness to Jayalalithaa put him in serious quandry when the film Nattamai (1994), which was still running in Tamil Nadu theatres, was broadcast by Jayalalithaa's television network JJ TV, which Sarathkumar gave her for personal viewing at her house. However, R. B. Choudary, the film industry's chief, has threatened to take legal action against Sarathkumar for misusing a tape provided to him for personal viewing. Sarathkumar, an empowered man, explained that he was taken by surprise and that he never expected Jayalalithaa to be on the channel for the telecast. Both Jayalalitha and JJ television tried to give him an explanation, but there was no success. The ruling party retaliated predictably, launching every forum to criticize Sarathkumar. He reacted angrily to his decision to join hands with Rajinikanth, who endorsed the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (TMC) party.

Sarath Kumar became a member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). In 1998, DMK chief Karunanidhi asked Sarathkumar to run in the Lok Sabha elections from Tirunelveli. DMK's in the election weakened dramatically, and the alliance could only muster 9 seats relative to the 39 seats it took in 1996. Sarathkumar was defeated by a margin of only 6904 votes despite the fact that DMK suffered badly in several constituencies. The party made him a Rajya Sabha member in July 2001, but he resigned before the 2006 Assembly elections to join the AIADMK with his wife Raadhika. Radhika, his wife, was banned from AIADMK for anti-party activities in October 2006. In November 2006, he resigned from AIADMK, citing the South Indian Artists' Union's president's position as president that needed "undivided attention."

Sarathkumar formed the All India Samathuva Makhach Katchi party on August 31, 2007. "We are disillusioned by the Dravidian parties, who have done nothing to grow the state despite being in office for four decades," Sarathkumar said. Sarathkumar joined the AIADMK alliance shortly before the 2011 Assembly elections, and his party was allotted two seats. He ran in two Assembly constituencies, Tenkasi and Nanguneri, and gained as part of the AIADMK alliance. Sarathkumar was the highest winner of Tenkasi and Ernavur A. Narayanan won from Nanguneri. Ernavur A. Narayanan was kicked out of the party in January 2016 for refusing to comply by the party's laws and indulging in anti-party activities. Sarath Kumar lost in Tiruchendur Constituency to DMK Candidate Anitha R. Radhakrishnan in the 2016 Assembly elections. "I have been closely associated with AIADMK for the past ten years," Sarathkumar said in a recent interview for The Hindu. I've even been named as the party's propaganda secretary. Despite the fact that I don't approve this particular name, my party didn't expand. Now, I want to concentrate on my party and be seen as a potential Chief Minister candidate."

Journalism career

Sarathkumar began working as a newspaper boy and managing newspaper circulation before moving on to become a journalist after finishing his studies. He was sent to Chennai to expand their business after establishing Dinakaran in Bangalore.

Sarathkumar is the editor and founder of Media Voice, a Tamil weekly newspaper. Sarath's personal interview with a news-maker each month to address current topics is one of Media Voice's most important value propositions. "Obwohl I'm a politician and actor now, the journalist in me is still alive." Sarath wrote: "I love multitasking." The Hindu states: He has come from humble beginnings to live an inspired life, and is society's most popular leader.
