Pia Cramling Career

Career

Cramling is the only woman to have earned the grandmaster title before 2000, except for Judit Polgar (who hasn't registered in women's events) who has never won the Women's World Champion award. According to Cramling, the World Championship is a team effort, and more established chess nations are likely to give their players greater recognition in major tournaments. However, Cramling has been in fairly close contention for the throne on four occasions (all in previous decades). She came in fourth and third place in the 1986 and 1996 Candidat cycles. She has been in the semifinals in 2008 and 2015. With these latest performances, she was able to participate in the FIDE Women's Grand Prix series in 2009-2011 and 2015-16 respectively. She has had more success in Europe, winning the Women's European Individual Chess Championship in 2003 and 2010. She was the first woman to win the Accentus Ladies Tournament in Biel in 2006.

Cramling competed for Sweden in both the open and women's championships, European Team Chess Championship in both the open and women's sections, Telechess Olympiad, and Nordic Cup. She has received the individual gold medal in the Women's Chess Olympiad as the best player on board 1 in 1984, 1988, and 2022 (according to the ratings' results). Cramling has won the European Club Cup for Women in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2016 for Team Cercle d'Echecs Monte Carlo.

Cramling earned the International Master (IM) award in 1983 and the Grandmaster (GM) award in 1992. In the tournament where she earned her first IM record, she defeated Raymond Keene. She achieved her three GM certificates in Italy in 1989, in Las Palmas in 1990, and Bern in 1992.
