Petr Mrazek Career

Playing career

Mrázek played in the Czech Extraliga, where he appeared for HC Vtkovice Steel during the 2007–08 post-season, before heading to North America.

Mrázek's first Ontario Hockey League (OHL) season with the Ottawa 67's was an incredible 30 games with a 3.00 goals against average (GAA) and a 0.95% save percentage. He appeared in eight playoff games with Ottawa, winning with a 4–0 record, 2.39 GAA, and a.928 save percentage. Mrázek was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the fifth round, 141st overall, at the end of the season, at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft from 25 to 26 June.

Mr.zek joined the Red Wings on October 19, 2011, a three-year, entry-level contract. However, he remained in the OHL for the 2011-2012 season, appearing in 50 regular season games for the 67's. He was 30-19-19 with three shutouts and a.917 save percentage in the regular season. He appeared in 17 of 18 games, winning 9–8 and a 0.9 percent save percentage.

Mrázek was signed by the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Detroit Red Wings' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, on an amateur try-out contract on April 4, 2011.

Mr.zek played with the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL, the Red Wings' second-tier minor league affiliate, in 2012–13, where he defeated the Kalamazoo Wings in his first game 4–1. Mr. Zek won three games in the ECHL before being called up to Grand Rapids in the AHL, with a 2.0 GAA and a.944 save percentage. In a 4–1 victory over the Texas Stars, he made his AHL debut with the Griffins on November 3rd and made 29 saves. Mrázek won 12 of his first 15 appearances with the Griffins overall, as well as establishing a franchise record by winning his first six starts. In a match against the Abbotsford Heat, he declared his first professional shutout on February 2nd. Since achieving a 0.50 GAA and a.981 save percentage in two games played, Mr.zek was named AHL Player of the Week for the week beginning on February 3rd.

Mr.zek made his NHL debut with the Red Wings on February 7, 2013, against the St. Louis Blues. Detroit defeated 5–1, with Mrázek making 26 saves. Mrázek won his ECHL, AHL, and NHL debuts in the same season, joining Alex Auld.

Mrázek later appeared for the Griffins in the AHL All-Star Classic and won in a 7–6 game. The Griffins finished first in the Midwest Division and defeated the Syracuse Crunch in the Calder Cup Finals to claim the Calder Cup Championship. Mr.zek attended all 24 playoff games and was 15–9 with four shutouts, a 2.31 GAA and a.916 save percentage.

Mr.zek was elected to the AHL Second All-Star Team in 2013-14 season, placing second in the AHL in GAA (2.10) and third in save percentage (0.94) through 32 regular season games. In his second season with the Griffins, he set a 22–9-1 record, while others in nine games with Detroit in the NHL saw action, earning a 2–4–0 record, 1.74 GAA, and.927 save percentage. His two victories in Edmonton on November 2nd and on St. Louis on April 13th were shutouts.

Mr.zek's one-year deal contract extension was agreed to by the Detroit Red Wings on July 1, 2014. He appeared in 29 games for the Red Wings in 2014–15, a 16–9–2 record, 2.38 GAA,.918 save percentage, and three shutouts. Mr. Zek was named AHL Player of the Week for the week ending 1 March 1, 2015, after leading the Griffins to three straight victories on the road with a 0.67 GAA and a.976 save percentage. On February 27 and February 28, he recorded consecutive shutouts against the Milwaukee Admirals and the Chicago Wolves, marking the third Griffin to ever record back-to-back road shutouts. In his last four games, Mr.zek had three shutouts. In his last 247:21 of game time, he has only scored two goals for a 0.49 GAA and 0.983 save percentage (117 saves from 119 shots). Mr.zek was recalled by the Red Wings on March 9th. Mr.zek hasn't lost a regulation match since being sent to the Griffins on February 17th, a 6–0-1 record, with a 1.13 goals against average, a 0.962 save percentage, and three shutouts. Mr.zek has a record of 9–2–1 overall in 13 games with the Griffins this season, with a 2.06 goals against average and a 0.927 save percentage.

Mr.zek made his Stanley Cup playoffs debut against the Tampa Bay Lightning on April 16, 2015. He made 44 saves on 46 shots in his first playoff game, leading the Red Wings to a 3–2 victory. Mr.zek defeated the United Kingdom 3–0 for his first in a row in the playoffs. Mrázek won by 4–0 on April 25, 2011 in their second playoff shutout. He was the 14th Red Wings goaltender to record two shutouts in a playoff series, and only the third rookie goaltender to do so, following Earl Robertson in 1937 and Harry Lumley in 1945. Mrázek came third in wins, second in goals-against average, first in save percentage, and second in shutouts among NHL rookie goaltenders who played more than 15 games. Mrázek was named Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association, which is now known as Detroit Sports Media, following the 2014-2015 season.

Mr. Zek was named as the NHL Second Star of the Week for the week ending 11 January 2016. Mr.zek's average GAA and a.978 save percentage were among his accomplishments during that period. With so many games played, Mr.zek's GAA ranks sixth among NHL goalies. Mr.zek has a 15–8–3 record and a.930 save percentage in 28 games played this season. Only Braden Holtby (.932) of Washington and Roberto Luongo (.931) of Florida have higher save percentages among goalies who have played more games.

Mrázek's contract extension was signed by the Red Wings on July 27, 2016, avoiding arbitration.

Mr.zek's tenure as the Red Wings' 25-season playoff streak came to an end. He went 18-21–9 with a 3.04 GAA and a.901 save percentage.

Mrázek was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft and a conditional third-round pick in 2019. He made 19 saves in the Flyers' 2–1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on February 22nd, his rookie appearance for the Flyers.

Mr.zek did not receive a qualifying bid by the Flyers at the end of the season, allowing him to free agency. Mr. Zek also agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Carolina Hurricanes on July 1, 2018.

Curtis McElhinney and Mrázek missed the majority of the 2018-19 season. The Hurricanes clinched a playoff berth for the first time in ten years on April 4, 2019. Mr.zek won his 23rd game of the season on the first day of the season. During the 2018–19 Carolina Hurricanes season, he had 23 victories and a 2.39 goals against average, his highest since 2015–16 with Detroit.

Mrázek and the Hurricanes shocked the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals in an eight-game series en route to the Eastern Conference Finals, for the first time in ten years. During the second round against the New York Islanders, he sustained an injury and was swapped by goaltender Curtis McElhinney for several games.

Mr. Zek re-signed with the Hurricanes on a two-year, $6.25 million contract on July 1, 2019. He set a 21–16–2 record during the 2019–20 Carolina Hurricanes season, just before the season's season came due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mrázek's fourth start 2 minutes and 47 seconds into the game after starting the COVID-21 season with a 0.99 GAA, crashing the net off. This was later revealed to be a thumb injury, severe enough that it required Mr. Zek to have surgery. Mr.zek recovered from injury for the Hurricanes on April 4, 2021, his third shutout of the season.

Mrázek signed as a free agent in a three-year, $11.4 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 28, 2021. Kyle Dubas, the Maple Leafs' general manager, imagined him as part of a goaltending team with Jack Campbell. Mr.zek, on the other hand, suffered a great deal in his time with the company, with no monthly save percentage above.900. The Leafs' goaltending was becoming a big point of discussion mid-year, with Campbell also struggling. Mr.zek was largely named as the nadir in the third period after he gave up four goals in six minutes but then let another goal be allowed immediately. Both Red Wings goaltenders failed, resulting in a 10–7 Leafs victory, one of the highest-scoring games in recent NHL history. Mrázek was released by the Toronto Maple Leafs on waivers, after playing one game with the Toronto Marlies before being recalled to the main team on March 20, 2022. Mr.zek briefly took over as starting goaltender after suffering a groin injury, but Marlies goaltender Erik Källgren came in. Mrázek's season came to an end due to his injury. Despite a.888 save percentage in 20 appearances, he finished with a 12–6–0 record due to the Leafs' potent offense. It was widely expected that the team would try to switch his deal in the offseason.

Mrázek and his first-round pick in 2022 NHL Entry Draft were traded by the Maple Leafs in exchange for a second-round pick in 2022.
