Kevin Hayes Life

Kevin Patrick Hayes (born May 8, 1992) is an American professional ice hockey player and an alternate captain for the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League.

In the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Hayes was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round, 24th overall.

Hayes signed his first professional deal with the New York Rangers in 2014 after four seasons at Boston College.

Hayes had played for the Rangers and the Winnipeg Jets before being traded to and signing with the Flyers.

Personal life

Hayes was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, on May 8, 1992, and she was the youngest of five children. Jimmy Hayes, his older brother, was a former National Hockey League (NHL) player. Tom Fitzgerald, the general manager of the New Jersey Devils and former NHL player, as well as former NHL player Keith Tkachuk, are among Hayes' cousins. In addition, Fitzgerald's sons Ryan and Casey were teammates with Hayes at Boston College and are both NHL players, and Tkachuk's Matthew and Brady are also on NHL rosters. He is a fan of the New England Patriots and the St. Louis Blues, where Tkachachuk played during Hayes' childhood. Johnny Gaudreau, a former Boston College teammate, is his closest friend in the NHL.

Hayes is a proponent of Hockey Fights Cancer, as both of his parents are survivors. When Hayes was in middle school, he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and his father, Kevin Sr., was diagnosed with throat cancer during Hayes' sophomore year at Boston College.

In 2020, Yards Brewing Company in Philadelphia introduced the "Big Hayes-y 13" beer, which was named after the Flyers' center. The beer is a New England IPA, a nod to Hayes' Boston upbringing.

Kevin Hayes Career

Playing career

Hayes got his start playing in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, representing South Shore in 2004 and 2005. "I thought it was just another fun tournament" after his family went to Canada and watch a lot of hockey and then go out in the snow and stuff." Future NHL stars Noel Acciari, Chris Wagner, and Charlie Coyle were among Hayes' South Shore teammates. In the 2009–10 season, he played high school hockey at Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, Massachusetts, scoring 67 points in 28 games, and was selected to participate in the 2010 National Junior Evaluation Camp in the United States. In the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, the Chicago Blackhawks selected Hayes in the first round, 24th overall, but Jimmy chose Boston College, which had recruited Jimmy a few years ago.

Hayes scored one goal and two assists in an exhibition game against the University of Toronto on October 15, 2010, defeating the Denver Pioneers 6–2. He missed the second half of the 2010–11 season due to a posterior cruciate ligament injury, and he finished with 14 points in 31 games. Hayes returned to the Eagles for a brief but profitable 2011–12 season. In the Northeast Regional semifinals of the 2012 NCAA Tournament, he helped against the Air Force Falcons in the Northeast Regional semifinals, as well as scoring a goal against the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the national semifinals. Boston College defeated the NCAA tournament, and the Hayes finished the season with 28 points.

Hayes had a beleaguered 2012–13 season despite scoring six goals and 19 assists. After scoring 24 points with the Eagles, he was suspended for breaching team rules. Jerry York, the Eagles' head coach, said that the suspension would be determined by how Hayes responded. In a match against the University of Lowell River Hawks on February 26, 2013, then sustained a leg injury and lost consciousness in the locker room. He was rushed to the hospital, where he had been diagnosed with compartment syndrome. He underwent four emergency surgeries on his left quadriceps femoris muscle and was hospitalized for 22 days. Hayes was told that his illness had been two hours from amputation if he hadn't been sorted out, and that there was a mystery about whether he'd be able to return to hockey.

Hayes' experience with compartment syndrome changed his opinion of hockey when he was allowed to return to play. "I think I always knew how important the game was to me," he said in the Boston Herald, "I think I did have to step up a bit and make my body more visible, take my education seriously, increase my flexibility, and conditioning, and basically, I'm still today." Hayes played on the Eagles' top line in 2013–14 NCAA season, scoring 65 points (27 goals and 38 assists) and ending the season with 1.62 points per game, the second-highest in the country, in the second season. Hayes was voted MVP of the 2014 Beanpot tournament and a member of the AHCA East First-Team All-American.

Hayes and the Blackhawks were unable to reach an agreement before the NHL deadline for college graduates was August 15, and Hayes became an unrestricted free agent in 2014. The New York Rangers signed him to an entry-level deal with a base salary of $925,000 per season at the NHL level less than a week later. Meanwhile, the Blackhawks got a second-round compensatory pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, which was later used to select Graham Knott. Norm Maciver, the Blackhawks' assistant general manager, said the Hayes decided not to sign them, saying the situation prompted the club to be more proactive in recruiting future draft picks like Michael Paliotta.

Hayes attended the Rangers' 2014 training camp prior to the 2014–15 season, after signing his deal. In a home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on October 12, 2014, he made his NHL debut with the Rangers, alongside Carl Hagelin and J. T. Miller. He made his debut in 19 shifts with 14:17 of ice time and a plus-minus of two. Hayes scored his first career NHL goal against the San Jose Sharks a few games later, while centering a line with Rick Nash and former Boston College teammate Chris Kreider. As the Rangers qualified for the 2015 Stanley Cup playoffs, he finished fifth in both points and assists in the regular season. Hayes finished third in all rookies in points and tied for second with five assists in the playoffs. In game four, he scored an overtime game winner to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins and give them a 3–1 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference first-round series. He scored the game-tying goal in a landslide victory over the Washington Capitals in the second round, and aided Dominic Moore in his late third period victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning in game one of the Eastern Conference Final.

When attending the Rangers' training camp before the 2015-16 season, head coach Alain Vigneault said he had hoped to give Hayes a chance on the first line with Kreider and Derek Stepan. His scoring decreased throughout the season, and after a goalless 16 games, he was a health scratch for the first time this season. "I think Kevin has had an extra long leash," Vigneault said about his decision. After missing two games in January, the Hayes returned to the lineup in January. Despite finishing the season with 14 goals and 22 assists for 36 points, the Rangers have signed him to a two-year contract extension.

Jimmy Vesey, a childhood friend who had signed with the Rangers as a collegiate free agent, was reunited with Hayes before the 2016–17 season. Vigneault attempted to use them on a line together to start the season, but Hayes was eventually moved to the third line with Michael Grabner and Miller due to their off-ice chemistry. In an eventual 6–1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on October 30, 2016, their line combined for nine points in an eventual 6–1 victory. The Hayes got off to a promising start with 13 goals and 22 assists in 47 games before suffering a lower body injury during a game against the Detroit Red Wings in January. Hayes' offensive skills improved during the first year of his new contract, scoring 17 goals and 32 assists for 49 points. Hayes scored 0 goals and 3 assists in 12 appearances at the 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs, and the Rangers were eliminated in game six of the second round against the Ottawa Senators. In this case, leg contusions have plagued Hayes for six straight games in the following season. Since returning from the team's 6–5 win over the San Jose Sharks on January 25, 2018, he had an assist. Hayes re-signed a one-year deal with the Rangers on July 31, 2018. He was an exception.

Hayes' offensive output increased in the 2018-19 season, his fifth with the Rangers, rising to 42 points in 51 games. Despite his good play and recovery from missing nine games due to an upper-body injury, he hinted that his time with the team may be coming to an end. Brendan Lemieux and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft just a few days after making this remark, he was traded to the Winnipeg Jets before the NHL trade deadline in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Hayes learned of the trade after Jets winger Blake Wheeler texted him, "Welcome to the team."

Hayes was placed on a line with Mark Scheifele and Wheeler after being acquired by the Winnipeg Jets. In a 5–3 victory over the visiting Nashville Predators on March 1, he scored his first goal with the team and had two assists. He was later named game's third star. Hayes helped the Jets qualify for the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs later this month while playing on a line with Kyle Connor. During their First round matchup against the St. Louis Blues, he appeared on the fourth line with Mathieu Persueu Perpetu and Jack Roslovic. He scored his first goal of the season in game three and included three shots on target and a miss to beat the Blues 6–3.

Hayes' negotiation rights were given to the Philadelphia Flyers on June 3, 2019, for a fifth-round draft pick in the 2019 Entry Draft. The Flyers negotiated Hayes to a seven-year, $50 million contract with an annual average of $7.14 million. Hayes and Vigneault, who had been fired from the Rangers after being fired in 2018 after being sent back to Philadelphia, were reunited.

Hayes made his debut in a preseason loss to the New York Islanders after a solid training camp result on a line with James van Riemsdyk and Oskar Lindblom. The Flyers' 2019-20 season featured him, Sean Couturier, and Jakub Voráek. Hayes scored his first goal with the team on a power play against the New Jersey Devils on October 9, 2019. Hayes appeared in all 69 regular season games, scoring 23 goals and 18 assists by the time the NHL suspended the 2019–20 NHL season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He had four short-handed goals and five game-winning goals during his career-best season in both directions. Hayes was named the recipient of the Gene Hart Memorial Award for the 2019-20 season on July 6, 2020, in honor of the player with the most "heart."

Hayes was one of 31 players invited to Toronto for the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs, competing on a line with Scott Laughton and Travis Konecny when the NHL returned to action. In the first round of the playoffs, he had six assists in as many games against the Montreal Canadiens, as well as one goal in game six to advance to the second round. In the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs, the Flyers lost to the Islanders; Hayes led the way in the playoffs with four goals and nine assists.

Hayes was appointed as an alternate captain for the Flyers in the 2020–21 season, shifting the position with Voráek on away games and Couturier returning as the permanent alternate. Hayes' season got off to a promising start, and he was dissatisfied with his won "average year." "I want to help the team every single night, but I don't do it as much this year," Hayes told reporters. In 55 games of the pandemic-shortened season, the Hayes finished second on the team with 127 shots, with 12 goals and 19 assists. Hayes underwent surgery for a sports hernia within a week of the season, with an anticipated recovery period of five weeks. After recovering from the injury, he revealed that he had started feeling abdominal pain early in the season and that it was "tough to get back to games."

Hayes' 2021–22 season was difficult for him, because he had to contend with a blood infection and the aftermath of multiple surgeries. Jimmy Carter died in August of 2021 due to a heroin overdose, as well. Hayes was able to play 48 games despite the tribulations, scoring 10 goals and 21 assists. He was selected a finalist for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the player who "exemplifies the attributes of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey."
