Paul Cook Career

Early life and career

Cook was born in Hammersmith and attended the Christopher Wren School, now Phoenix High School, London's White City Estate, where he met Steve Jones. The pair met with their classmates in 1972-1983, Cook and Jones, as well as their school friend Wally Nightingale, formed The Strand, a dance band. The Strand developed into the Sex Pistols within three years.

In comparison to drummers Kenney Jones of the Faces, Al Jackson Jr., and Mitch Mitchell of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cook's early influences included Motown, ska, and glam rock bands like David Bowie, T. Rex, Roxy Music, and Slade.

Jacob Slater plays Cook in the 2022 Craig Pearce – Danny Boyle FX biographical drama miniseries Pistol.

Later career

Cook and Jones first appeared in San Francisco on January 14, 1978, after the Sex Pistols' final concert, The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. On the album version of "Silly Thing," the two also recorded a few songs with the Sex Pistols' name and Cook singing lead. With Andy Allan, the pair formed The Professionals, a new band. Allan caused some legal difficulties; he appeared on "Silly Thing" and the first few Professionals recordings, but had no recording contract and was neither recognized nor paid. Consequently, the Virgin Records compilation album Cash Cows, which featured The Professionals' track "Kick Down the Doors," was withdrawn. On Johnny Thunders' solo album, So Alone, Cook and Jones worked together.

They released four singles, recorded a self-titled LP that was postponed until 1990, and I Didn't See It Coming in November 1981. Cook, Paul Myers, and Ray McVeigh, three members of the band's American tour to promote the album were killed in a car accident. Although the Professionals returned to America in the spring of 1982 after recovery, Jones and Myers' drug use hampered the band's prospects. They turned down a first spot on tour for The Clash and ended up.

Cook and Jones formed Bananarama, an English new wave girl group. Cook contributed to the trio's debut album, "Aie a Mwana," and served as a producer on their 1982 debut album Deep Sea Skiving.

Cook appeared in the late 1980s with former Bow Wow Wow guitarist Matthew Ashman, and after a time out of the music industry, worked with Phil Collen in the 1990s. He appeared on Edwyn Collins' A Girl Like You, his first appearance as a session musician, as well as a long association with Collins as a session guitarist. In 1996, Cook reunited with the Sex Pistols, who were still alive on the Filthy Lucre world tour.

On the 30th anniversary of Never Mind The Bollocks, the Sex Pistols, including Paul Cook, appeared at the Brixton Academy on November 8, 2007. Six more gigs were added to satisfy demand, six more gigs were added, two on September and ten of November.

The Sex Pistols appeared at the Isle of Wight Festival as the headlining act on Saturday night, the Peace and Love Festival in Sweden, the Live at Loch Lomond Festival in Scotland, and the Summercase Festival in Madrid.

Phil Collen of Def Leppard and their companion Simon Laffy, who used to play in Collen's pre-Leppard band Girl, were on stage with Man-Raze, which also featured Phil Collen from Def Leppard and their pal Simon Laffy. They unveiled Surreal's debut album in 2008 and toured the United Kingdom in late 2009.

Cook joined Vic Godard and Subway Sect in 2011 and reconnected with Paul Myers from The Professionals. Cook has worked with Godard for nearly two decades, both on and off. They toured through 2012 and then played 1978 Now with Collins in March 2012.

Cook, with Tom Spencer filling in for Steve Jones, reunited with the Professionals for a concert at the 100 Club in honor of the introduction of a three disc set (The Complete Professionals) by Universal Music Group on October 16, 2015. The band announced a three show tour from January to March 19th. Rich Kids was on display at O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire in London for 16 May, but it was postponed until June 23 due to the venue's continuing structural repairs.

Portsmouth fans invade Fratton Park pitch after winning league title and promotion to the Championship

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 17, 2024
A dramatic late 3-2 comeback win over Barnsley sealed the League One title for Pompey as they returned to the second-tier for the first time in 12 years. Video footage from a bird's eye view above the stadium shows thousands of fans running onto the pitch at Fratton Park. Blue flares can also be seen getting lit as the jubilant fans embrace and hug their heroic players. Promotion marks a huge turning point in the club's history, who were relegated from the Championship in 2012 after receiving a 10-point deduction for entering administration for the second time in two years.

As the Spireites return to the Football League after a six-year absence, Chesterfield captain Jamie Grimes calls National League victory 'the best day of my career'

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 24, 2024
HENRY CLARK: Jamie Grimes, the Chesterfield captain, was left to savour a day of firsts after being sent back to the Football League after a six-year absence. The 33-year-old defender earned his first brace of his career to help clinch his second National League title on a sunny afternoon for the first time in history. If there is one, I've not found it.'

Back in the big time!Chesterfield seal return to the EFL as runaway National League champions a MONTH before the end of the season - with 3-0 victory against Boreham Wood sealing the title for Paul Cook's Spireites

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 23, 2024
LEWIS STEELE AT THE SMH GROUP STADIUM: Nothing sums up Chesterfield's enthralling return to the Football League is any better than the players' walk-out songs. The sun is shining in the sky, there isn't a cloud in sight, it's stopped raining, everybody is in the game...and, oh my goodness, it's a beautiful new day.' Unlike Mr Blue Sky's 1977 debut, there have been no blue skies on this club in the last decade, with back-to-back relegations followed by six seasons in a shambles of non-league. But, in the end, it's a stunning new day in Derbyshire. The corks were more literal than literal, but Paul Cook's men's season would come to a glorious season. In truth, those champagne bottles have been on ice long before Christmas. The Spireites tragically missed out on promotion last year when they were defeated by Notts County in a play-off final penalty shoot-out, but they haven't looked back since.
