Rufus Tiger Taylor (born 8 March 1991) is an English musician best known as the drummer for British rock band The Darkness since May 2015 and as a touring drummer for the Queen + Adam Lambert show.
He is the son of Queen drummer Roger Taylor.
Early life
Taylor was born in London on March 8, 1991 to Queen drummer Roger Taylor and his longtime girlfriend Deborah Leng. Rufus' unusual middle name, "Tiger" was chosen by late Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury, according to his father. Taylor claims that growing up with drums made him decide he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps as he was uninterested academically, kicking out of school at the age of 16 in favour of a ski instruction course with Warren Smith Ski Academy.
Career
Taylor's first public appearance was at the 2008 Royal Variety Exhibition, where he performed drums for Kerry Ellis and his father Roger Taylor's Queen partner Brian May to an audience that included Charles, Prince of Wales, and Duchess of Cornwall. Spike Edney, the legendary queen touring musician, appeared in 2009 as part of his SAS (Spike's All-Stars) band. He performed on the Queen's musical stage show We Will Rock You and then performed with Brian May and his father, Kerry Ellis, on her album Anthems, contributing some drum tracks.
Taylor would appear alongside his father when he joined the Queen + Adam Lambert project in 2011, providing drums and percussion for the performance. His "drum battles" with his father and his adoption as lead drummer on Queen hits including "Tie Your Mother Down" and "A Kind of Magic" were two of his tour highlights, although his father left the kit to provide lead vocals. Taylor has appeared on both of their world tours and is still a mainstay of their live show.
Taylor became the drummer for English rock band The Darkness in May 2015, with guitarist Dan Hawkins confirming the news on a UK radio show. He has performed on the Darkness albums Pinewood Smile (2017), Easter Is Cancelled (2019), and Motorheart (2021).
