Vinnie Colaiuta Career

Career

Colaiuta was given his first drum kit when he was seven years old. He did it naturally, with no instruction. When he was fourteen, the school band teacher gave him a book that teaches him some of the basics. Buddy Rich was his favorite drummer before he heard Tony Williams' album Ego, which changed his life. Coloiuta was also listening to organ groups, including Jack McDuff, Jimmy McGriff, and Don Patterson.

He listened to and admired Alphonse Mouzon and Billy Cobham as a student at Berklee College of Music, when jazz fusion was on the rise.

He worked in Boston after graduating from school. He appeared on Al Kooper's brief tour and later worked in California on Christopher Morris' album, which Kooper was producing. Despite returning to Boston, Colaiuta was drawn back to California by classmates. During the 1978 blizzard, he rode the bus from Boston to Los Angeles. He gained the opportunity to play drums for Frank Zappa after appearing in jazz clubs. He performed with Zappa and appeared on the albums Joe's Garage, Tinsel Town Rebellion, and Shut Up'n Play Yer Guitar.

Joe's Garage was selected as one of the best drum shows of all time by a Modern Drummer magazine. In the lyrics of the song Catholic Girls, Colaiuta was called out by name by Dale Bozzio (playing the character of Mary).

He left touring with Zappa in 1981 to become a studio musician, and Gino Vannelli's band Pages and pop singer Gino Vannelli began recording for the band Pages and pop star. Opportunities arose with saxophonist Tom Scott and bassist Larry Klein, who invited Colaiuta to perform on a record maintained by Klein's then-girlfriend Joni Mitchell. Colaiuta was the best man at their wedding when Klein and Mitchell were married. He toured with Mitchell in the 1980s. He became the house drummer of The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers in 1986. Mark Hudson founded the Party Boys and the Tramp, and the group is now known as the Party Boys and the Tramp.

He was living the busy life of a studio musician, recording albums, doing TV and film production during the day, and playing nights at night. He has performed with jazz players Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Buell Neidlinger, and the Buddy Rich Big Band in addition to pop bands.

Colaiuta's calling from Sting, travelled to England, and gained the audition to become a member of his band in 1990. He remained with Sting for a large portion of the 1990s, as well as touring and recording the albums Ten Summoner's Tales (1993), Brand New Day (1999) and Sacred Love (2006). He appeared with Sting in the first concert to be held at the Bataclan in Paris a year earlier.

He debuted his first solo album in 1994. From the annual reader polls of Modern Drummer magazine, he has received more than 15 Drummer of the Year awards. Among the ten awards in the "Best Overall" category are ten.
