Later career
Cook and Jones first appeared in San Francisco on January 14, 1978, after the Sex Pistols' final concert, The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. On the album version of "Silly Thing," the two also recorded a few songs with the Sex Pistols' name and Cook singing lead. With Andy Allan, the pair formed The Professionals, a new band. Allan caused some legal difficulties; he appeared on "Silly Thing" and the first few Professionals recordings, but had no recording contract and was neither recognized nor paid. Consequently, the Virgin Records compilation album Cash Cows, which featured The Professionals' track "Kick Down the Doors," was withdrawn. On Johnny Thunders' solo album, So Alone, Cook and Jones worked together.
They released four singles, recorded a self-titled LP that was postponed until 1990, and I Didn't See It Coming in November 1981. Cook, Paul Myers, and Ray McVeigh, three members of the band's American tour to promote the album were killed in a car accident. Although the Professionals returned to America in the spring of 1982 after recovery, Jones and Myers' drug use hampered the band's prospects. They turned down a first spot on tour for The Clash and ended up.
Cook and Jones formed Bananarama, an English new wave girl group. Cook contributed to the trio's debut album, "Aie a Mwana," and served as a producer on their 1982 debut album Deep Sea Skiving.
Cook appeared in the late 1980s with former Bow Wow Wow guitarist Matthew Ashman, and after a time out of the music industry, worked with Phil Collen in the 1990s. He appeared on Edwyn Collins' A Girl Like You, his first appearance as a session musician, as well as a long association with Collins as a session guitarist. In 1996, Cook reunited with the Sex Pistols, who were still alive on the Filthy Lucre world tour.
On the 30th anniversary of Never Mind The Bollocks, the Sex Pistols, including Paul Cook, appeared at the Brixton Academy on November 8, 2007. Six more gigs were added to satisfy demand, six more gigs were added, two on September and ten of November.

They unveiled Surreal's debut album in 2008 and toured the United Kingdom in late 2009.
Cook joined Vic Godard and Subway Sect in 2011 and reconnected with Paul Myers from The Professionals. Cook has worked with Godard for nearly two decades, both on and off. They toured through 2012 and then played 1978 Now with Collins in March 2012.
Cook, with Tom Spencer filling in for Steve Jones, reunited with the Professionals for a concert at the 100 Club in honor of the introduction of a three disc set (The Complete Professionals) by Universal Music Group on October 16, 2015. The band announced a three show tour from January to March 19th.
