Goodman was a defense lawyer who was convicted of ordering the assassination of Federal Judge John H. Wood Jr., Jr., and Jamiel "Jimmy" Chagra, a 1970s drug dealer who was known to have a short and ferocious temper, during his career as a prosecutor. Nicky Santoro's character in the semi-real 1995 movie Casino was based on Spilotro and was created by actor Joe Pesci. Goodman appeared in the film as himself, where he was depicted defending "Ace Rothstein," a character closely based on Lefty Rosenthal and starring Robert De Niro.
Goodman also defended former San Diego Mayor Roger Hedgecock, who was found guilty of unlawful campaign contributions and was then ordered to resign. Hedgecock was cleared of all charges on appeal. Goodman was a senior partner in the law firm Goodman & Chesnoff.
Goodman and his wife became active in the local Jewish federation shortly after they moved to Las Vegas. Carolyn was eventually in charge of the federation's women's divisions.

Goodman had entertained the possibility of seeking the Democratic nomination in Nevada's 2006 United States Senate election in order to run against incumbent Republican Senator John Ensign. He eventually decided that he did not run for the nomination, rather than Jack Carter, the son of President Jimmy Carter.
Goodman fueled rumors that he will run as an outsider in the 2010 Nevada gubernatorial election against incumbent Republican Jim Gibbons and pro-independence candidate Rory Reid. However, Goodman did not run for governor, citing his desire to remain close to his family and objections to moving to Carson City.
In 2009, Las Vegas commentator Dayvid Figler wrote a story about Goodman possibly becoming the country's first Jewish president.
