Omar Sy (born 20 January 1978) is a French actor and comedian.

Fred Testot's sketches, as well as his appearances in X-Men: Days of Future Past, Jurassic World, and Transformers: The Last Knight.

Sy received the César Award in 2012 for his role in The Intouchables, becoming the first recipient of sub-Saharan African descent to receive the award.

Early life

Sy was born in Trappes, on the twentieth of January 1978, the fourth of eight children, and the fourth of eight others in the Île-de-France department. Both of his parents are from West Africa. Diaratou's Mauritanian mother, Diaratou, and his Senegalese father, Demba, worked in an auto parts factory in Bakel until moving to France in 1962. Sy is of Fulani origins. He was born in Trappes' low-income suburban housing projects. Every other summer, the family travelled to Senegal and then spoke Pulaar at home.

Personal life

Sy married Hélène, the mother of his five children, in Tremblay-sur-Mauldre on July 5, 2007. They had been together for ten years before marrying. Hélène is the founder of CéKeDuBonheur, a non-profit that helps children's wards at French hospitals, and Siyah Organics, a Sénégalo-American organic-supplements firm. The family lived in Montfort-l'Amaury, a greniere of Île-de-France, before transferring to Los Angeles in 2012. Sy spent a daily language tutor and watched Keeping Up with the Kardashians to improve his English.

Sy is Muslim.

Career

Sy began his career after high school, working at Radio Nova, where he met his comedy partner Fred Testot. Later on, he appeared on Canal+'s Le Cinéma de Jamel, with Jamel Debbouze. Le Visiophon was then created as a television show. He appeared in several television and stage shows, including Je ne pas mon âge and Omar et Fred: le spectacle, among other things. With Testot, which was a French short comedy television series from 2005 to 2012 on Canal+, the most notable thing was that Sy co-hosted Service après-vente des émissions, which was a French short comedy television series.

In 2006, he appeared on Fort Boyard, a television game show.

Sy then moved to Los Angeles, where he lent his voice to Zip in the French version of the Tomb Raider Legend video game. In Disney's Brother Bear, he had previously voiced a sheep.

In 2008, he appeared in "Bienvenue chez les Bylkas," a Sinik video clip. He performed some of the Logorama's characters with his partner Fred Testot in 2009.

Sy played Intouchables in 2011, playing a young man who becomes the personal care assistant to a wealthy quadriplegic (played by François Cluzet). The film had a massive success in 2011, winning the French box office and becoming the best-selling French film of all time in its home country, with more than 19 million tickets sold. As a result, Sy was voted third favorite French celebrity behind Yannick Noah and Zinedine Zidane. For his work, he was named Best Actor in the 2012 Globe de Cristal. He has since been nominated for the Satellite Award for Best Actor. The Best Actor Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival was shared between him and co-star François Cluzet. In addition, he received the César Award for Best Actor in 2012 for the same film.

Sy was named France's top celebrity on December 30, 2012, ahead of fellow actor Gad Elmaleh, according to a Le Journal du Dimanche survey.

Sy was in X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014, portraying the character Bishop. He appeared in Samba, directed by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano. He appeared in the fourth installment of the Jurassic Park franchise, Jurassic World, which was released in June 2015. He appeared in Burnt as a defused chef. Hot Rod appeared in the film Transformers: The Last Knight, the fifth installment in the Transformers franchise, in 2017. He appeared in Netflix's hit series Lupin, a modern day retelling of Arsène Lupin books, in 2021. Lupin has become one of Netflix's most viewed non-English series. Sy has also signed a multi-year Netflix feature film contract. He appeared on Time 100, Time's annual list of the world's most influential people in 2021. Sy has recently signed a first-look contract with HBO Max to produce series for several markets, particularly those that are French-speaking.
