Omar Doom (born June 29, 1976) is an American actor, singer, and comedian.
In the 2009 film Inglourious Basterds directed by Quentin Tarantino, Doom is best known to film audiences for his role as PFC Omar Ulmer.
Early life
Omar Doom was born in Easton, Pennsylvania, to parents Dr. Rashid and Jawahira Makhachdomi. Both his parents are from India's Kashmir region. His father is a physician at Easton Hospital. He was one of four siblings, as well as his three sisters. Every week, Doom's parents will bring the family to a cultural museum or exhibit. For example, the family might attend an opera or play in Manhattan, New York City, or a film at a local art house theater.
Doom graduated from Easton High School in 1994 and fronted Ordeal, a tribute band. Doom obtained a degree in painting at Parsons The New School for Design after high school.
Career
After Parsons, Doom returned to a singing career. Stretch Armstrong, a successful DJ and music producer, and he became the frontman of a two-person electronic rock band called Doomington. The pair is now defunct.
Doom met Quentin Tarantino in Los Angeles in 1998 through mutual acquaintances. According to reports, they have been close friends ever since. Tarantino has been known to welcome Doom over to his house for movie marathons. Tarantino held a birthday party for Doom at one point. The gathering featured old television shows, cartoons, as well as films including Hammerhead and The Mack.
Makhachdomi was encouraged by Tarantino to pursue an acting career and adopt the shorter stage name, Omar Doom. At the time, Doom was not interested in acting. Rather, he was both a singer and a co-running of a clothing line named Diabla with Saira, one of his sisters. Doom began studying acting following Tarantino's lead. Doom described Tarantino's guidance in a press junket in Berlin for Inglourious Basterds, "Quentin told me I'd be good in films." He really pushed me. I decided to try it out. I took his advice and tried acting out.
In the 2007 film Death Proof, Quentin Tarantino hired Doom for his first acting role, but in a small role as Vanessa Ferlito's character's love interest, Nate. In his forthcoming film, Inglourious Basterds, Tarantino further cast Doom. Doom didn't know he was in the film until Tarantino called him two weeks before the shooting was supposed to begin. During World War II, Doom was played as one of the film's eight Basterds, a group of Jewish American soldiers charged with hunting down and killing Nazi soldiers in occupied France. In May 2009, Doom and the cast appeared at the Cannes Film Festival.
On August 20th, 2013, Doom released an EP under the name STRAIGHT RAZOR on Lil Death Records. The single "Whiskey & Ativan" was accompanied by remixes from Monsieur Monsieur (Bromance Records), Thee Mike B (Play it Down Records), and Sinden (Grizzly).
