Early life and education
Norma Arraez was born on June 27, 1945 to Estrella C. Granofsky and Salvador Mariategui Williams, a middle-class family living in New York City's Upper East Side. She aspired to be a painter. Kamali obtained a diploma in illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology. After graduating, Kamali worked as a freelance fashion illustrator for a year. She was also a consultant for Northwest Orient Airlines from 1966 to 1967.
Personal life
She married Mohammad 'Eddie' Kamali in 1968. In 1977, the couple divorced. Marty Edelman, her long-time companion, is engaged. Kamali is of Lebanese and Basque descent.
