Rachel Irene Roy (born January 15, 1974) is an American fashion designer.
Early life and education
Roy was born in San Bernardino County, California, and was raised in Seaside, California, as a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. She graduated from Seaside High School. Rajendra Roy, her brother, is the chief film curator of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Roy's mother is Dutch, and her father is Bengali Indian. Roy attended Columbia Union College (now called Washington Adventist University) in Takoma Park, Maryland, before moving to New York City, where she worked as a wardrobe stylist and interned at Rocawear.
Personal life
Rachel Roy and Damon Dash married in late 2004, or 2005, and they have two children. In 2009, she applied for divorce. Roy was given sole custody of both children in April 2015; she applied for a warrant of protection against Dash. Roy and her children were granted a three-year restraining order against Dash by the court. Dash filed a lawsuit against her, alleging negligence of fiduciary service and other claims relating to Royale Etenia, a fashion business that formed during their marriage.
Career
She rose to the position of creative director of the women's and children's divisions at Rocawear, where she first met her future husband, Damon Dash. Roy introduced her eponymous clothing line in 2004.
Roy was given a Bollywood industry award in early 2006 for her contribution to American fashion. Roy was inducted into the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2007. Jones Apparel Group formed a joint venture with Rachel Roy in June 2008. However, Jones ultimately decided to sell the Rachel Roy brand to another entity in 2013 rather than liquidate it. They also intend to sell her trademarks to another company. Roy fought back and sued Jones Apparel. The judge ruled that she had 100% creative control of her company and would make a decision on the buyer. The suit was eventually sold to Sycamore Partners, who then leased it out. Royale Etenia LLC, her fashion business, is a member of Topson Downs, as of 2021. The Royale owns 36% of the company, while Dash and Roy retain a 50 percent stake.

Roy launched The RACHEL Rachel Roy collection, an affordable diffusion line of sportswear, boots, and accessories, in August 2009. The label "RACHEL Rachel Roy" is exclusive to Macy's in the United States and in The Bay in Canada. Roy and Grammy Award-winning British pop singer Estelle announced their collaboration on a jewelry line for the Spring 2010 RACHEL Rachel Roy collection in summer 2009. In Fall 2010, Roy created a capsule collection in collaboration with model Jessica Stam for Macy's stores and RachelRoy.com. Roy has been recognized for her contributions as an illustrator, including an ACE AWARD in November 2010.
