Early life and education
Rodriguez was born in Newark, New Jersey, as the eldest child and sole son of Cuban parents. Narciso Rodrs II, a longshoreman, and Rawedia Marquez Gonzalez, his parents. On the Canary Islands, his paternal grandfather was born.
He attended St. Cecilias High School, a small Catholic academy in Kearny, New Jersey, in 1979.
Parsons The New School for Design, a New York City art and design school, studied at the Parsons The New School for Design. Narciso's parents were against it.
Career
Rodriguez did freelance design work in New York before joining Anne Klein's Women's Design Director and later working for Calvin Klein. Carolyn Bessette's wedding dress for her wedding to John F. Kennedy Jr. in 1996. He attracted a lot of notice when he arranged the wedding dress of fellow Calvin Klein employee Carolyn Bessette. In 1997, he began his own brand.
As George magazine collapsed after John F. Kennedy Jr.'s death, Rodriguez recruited Stephanie Mikesell, who had been an editorial assistant there, as his assistant. When she married Mark Madoff, Bernie Madoff's oldest son, she arranged her wedding gown.
He launched Narciso Rodriguez for Her in 2003, based on a bottle of Egyptian musk oil he had been given in high school.
Rodriguez, who had ceased his relationship with his label's manufacturer, Aeffe, was over US$1 million in debt to his suppliers by 2006 and needed fabric donations for his spring collection.
Liz Claiborne purchased a 5 percent interest in the Narciso Rodriguez brand on May 5, 2007. However, Narciso Rodriguez purchased the 50% interest back from Liz Claiborne for 12 million dollars in 2008. Michelle Obama wore a dress from Narciso Rodriguez' spring 2009 collection when she joined her husband, Barack Obama, for the first time as president-elect of the United States on the stage at Grant Park in Chicago on November 4, 2008. The dress, which was first shown at New York City's Fashion Week in September 2008, was the product of Rodriguez's "stress-relief" design collection. Rodriguez was a strong backer in Barack Obama's fashion campaign, but he criticized a slowdown in his company in August 2008 as a result of "this Bush mess." Michelle Obama wore Narciso Rodriguez for her final State of the Union appearance as First Lady. Rodriguez' clothes were included in a catwalk scene in the film The Women of the Women's same year, as being the character Mary Haines (played by Meg Ryan).
