Early life and education
Quincy Jones, the eldest child of composer/arranger Quincy Jones' marriage to actress Peggy Lipton Jones, was born in Los Angeles, California. She is Jewish on her mother's side and an African-American on her father's side. Harold Lipton, a corporate lawyer, and Rita Benson, an artist, were Lipton's parents.
Jones was born in Bel-Air with her younger sister Rashida, who is an actor and screenwriter. Jones lived with her father and her sister, who lived with their mother after she and her parents divorced when she was eleven years old. Jones left Los Angeles' Fashion Institute for Design and Merchandising at the age of 19 to work with designer Tommy Hilfiger.
Jones dated rapper and actress LL Cool J from 1992 to 1994. LL Cool J's autobiography, "I Make My Own Rules," wrote that he ended their relationship because they "didn't believe the same things." "She praised a guru and statues, and I praise God," he said.
In 1996, Jones dated rapper and actress Tupac Shakur. She was in their Las Vegas hotel room when he was fired on September 7, 1996, and she and Shakur were in the hospital when he died as a result of his injury six days later. Leonardo DiCaprio was dated by Jones in 1999.
Jones had a close friendship with singer and actress Aaliyah, whom she met when modeling for Tommy Hilfiger.
She was married to Jeffrey Nash from 2003 to 2006.
Kidada Jones began working as a celebrity stylist for her father's publication Vibe magazine. She gained a following when she styled pop star Michael Jackson for the cover of Vibe in 1995. Jones was hired by designer Tommy Hilfiger, who ran a huge ad campaign focusing on Jones and a group of her friends (including Aaliyah, Tamia, Kate Hudson, Nicole Richie, and Oliver Hudson). For eight years, she served as his muse. Jones' fashion ventures included three years of designing a clothing line for Snoop Dogg. Jones also appeared in Elle, Vogue, and Harper's Bazaar during this period.
Jones has been designing for Kidada for Disney Couture since 2005. Jones acts "as a conduit to hip tastemakers the brand might otherwise ignore," according to the W magazine. "Kidada is not just one of those people who points out what's cool," Jim Calhoun, Disney's executive vice president of consumer products, North America. "She has a hand in making it cool." She also works with Disney projects.
Jones wrote School of Awake, a book that was intended to educate young girls in 2017. Jones appeared on Oprah Winfrey's Super Soul on Sunday.
