Early life
Wyle, the middle of three children, was born in Hollywood, California, and Stephen Wyle, a registered orthopedic head nurse, and Stephen Wyle, an electrical engineer and entrepreneur. His father was Jewish (of Russian-Jewish descent), while his mother, Episcopalian, and he was raised "fairly nondenominationally" in both faiths. Wyle's parents divorced in the 1970s, and his mother married James C. Katz, a film restorationist with three children of his own from a previous marriage. Edith and Frank Wyle, Wyle's paternal grandparents, founded the Los Angeles Craft and Folk Art Museum, and his grandfather founded Wyle Laboratories. Edith R. Wyle was an expressionist painter who also created The Egg and The Eye, a café and shop in Los Angeles' Miracle Mile district.
Wyle was educated at The Thacher School in Ojai, California, and graduated in 1989 with the class of 1989. Wyle wrote a play in college and appeared in high school productions, as well as winning an award for a play he wrote. When living in a tiny apartment on Hollywood Boulevard, he worked with acting coach Larry Moss after graduation.

Career
Wyle's big break came when he was given the pilot script for ER and was portrayed as medical student John Carter. When he first joined the cast, he was the youngest actor in the cast. When Wyle left the show after the 11th season (2005), he was the first major cast member of the show since its inception (1994) (2005). In each of the show's first five seasons, his appearances earned him Emmy Award nominations. He was nominated three times for the Screen Actor Guild Award for Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries, or Motion Picture Made for Television, and he received the 2001 TV Guide Award for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Wyle left the series at the end of season 11, but he returned in guest appearances for a four-episode arc during season 12. He said he resigned because he wanted to spend more time with his family and friends and to make room for the new generation. However, Wyle returned to ER in 2009 for the fifteenth and final season, as well as the series's finale.
