Arvesen was born in White Plains, New York, to Norwegian parents. Jan Arvesen, her father, was a Norwegian diplomat and was Norway's ambassador to Mexico (1979-1985) and Portugal (1996-1998). Sidsel, mother of Norwegian actress Sidsel (pronounced "sis-sell") was a Norwegian actress. Arvesen began her acting career as an actress, model, dancer, and a classically trained pianist in Norway. She left Norway in 1986 to pursue her dream of an acting career in the United States, where she has appeared in numerous television shows, commercials, and movies since college. According to Arvesen, American casting directors refused to give her overseas acting credits. After appearing in the 1987 film Dragnet with Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks, she eventually earned her first U.S. screen credit and Screen Actor Guild membership card. After she quit being employed in the many soap operas that made her famous, her career aspirations changed from acting to modeling for television commercials, print ads, and popular magazines. Arvesen began a business called The Arvesen Group and founded her own production company.
In a March 21, 1989 issue, Soap Opera Digest named Arvesen as one of "TV's Most Beautiful Women" on their website, which had over 1 million followers at the time.
