Victor Moritz Wagner (born 26 April 1997) is a German professional basketball player for the Washington Wizards of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

He played for the University of Michigan from 2015 through his junior season for the 2017–18 Wolverines team.

The forward entered his name for the 2017 NBA draft without hiring an agent, but withdrew and returned to Michigan.

He was selected with the 25th overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. He was a 2018 All-Big Ten second team selection by both the coaches and the media.

Following the season, he was the 2018 Big Ten Conference Men's Basketball Tournament MVP helping the team earn the Big Ten Tournament championship for the second time in a row.

He was also named to the West Region All-Tournament Team and Final Four All-Tournament Team during the 2018 NCAA Basketball Tournament.

He has represented the German national basketball team and played professionally in the Basketball Bundesliga.

Personal life

Wagner has a younger brother Franz who is his teammate on the Orlando Magic, and played basketball for Michigan.

Early career

Wagner began his basketball career in Alba Berlin's youth ranks. Wagner competed for the club's under-19 Bundesliga team, winning the German championship in 2013. He appeared on Alba Berlin's Bundesliga roster in 2014-2015, scoring 2.3 points per game. During the 2014-15 season, he appeared in two Euroleague games.

College career

Through an email from a former teaching acquaintance in Germany, Wagner first caught University of Michigan head coach John Beilein in 2014. Wagner also posted a self-made highlight video to Beilein, using social media links. In the end, Beilein recruited Wagner from Berlin. Wagner declared in April 2015 that he did not want to attend the University of Michigan and compete for the Michigan Wolverines. He turned down a bid to play professionally by opting to go to college.

Michigan defeated Tulsa, 67-62, in the first Four rounds of the 2016 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament on March 16, 2016. Wagner had four blocks and had a season-high eight rebounds against Tulsa after blocking two shots all season.

In the 2017 Big Ten Conference men's basketball tournament opener against Illinois on March 9, Wagner had five steals, the tournament's first ever men's basketball tournament opener. Michigan captured its first Big Ten tournament title since 1998 just three days later. Michigan defeated Louisville 73–69 on March 19, defeating them 73–69 in the 2017 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. Wagner's career-high 26 points helped defeat them. Wagner played all 38 games and averaged 12.1 points and 4.2 rebounds per game, while shooting 39.5% on three-pointers. He was the team's top rebounder at the end of the season. Both the coaches and the media selected him as a Top-British mention All-Big Ten pick following the season.

Both Wagner and teammate D. J. Wilson signed the 2017 NBA draft on April 10, 2017, but did not recruit agents, which gave them until May 24 to delete their names and maintain their athletic status in Michigan. Declaring early enabled him to participate in workouts with NBA clubs, making him eligible for a spot in the NBA Draft Combine between May 9-14. Jeff Goodman of ESPN announced on April 30, 2017 that he had been accepted to the NBA draft Combine. Wagner opted to drop out of the 2017 draft and return to Michigan for the 2017-18 season on May 24, 2017.

Wagner was chosen to the 2017 All-Big Ten team, a 30-man team. He was also one of two Big Ten players selected to the 21-Man Karl Malone Award watch list. He was a finalist for the John R. Wooden Award and Naismith College Player of the Year awardee.

Michigan defeated the fourth-ranked Michigan State Spartans 82-112 in East Lansing on January 13, 2018, with Wagner scoring 8-for-8 from three-point range and 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Wagner made his career-high 27 points, including 3-for-4 from three-point range and 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Wagner had more three-point field goals (47) than any NCAA player 6 ft 11 in (2.11 m) or taller) following the 2017-18 Big Ten Conference men's basketball regular season, making him the second team All-Big Ten pick by the coaches and the media's second team All-Big Ten nomination.

In the quarterfinals of the 2018 Big Ten Conference men's basketball tournament, Michigan defeated Nebraska 77-58. Wagner had 20 points and 13 rebounds in his seventh double-double of the season. His 13 rebounds were the first two rounds of the 2018 tournament at a single-game high. Wagner earned his 1,000th career point on the following day in the Big Ten tournament's semifinals, becoming the 54th Wolverine to reach the milestone. In a 75–64 victory over the second-ranked Michigan State Spartans, he finished the game with a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds. Wagner scored 17 points in Michigan's second straight Big Ten tournament championship game against Purdue on March 4, 2018. Wagner was voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Wagner averaged 15.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in the 2018 tournament.

Wagner, who played 12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in the first four games of the 2018 NCAA basketball tournament, was joined by Wolverines teammates Matthews and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman of the West Region All-Tournament team. Michigan defeated Loyola–Chicago 69–57 in the national semifinals on March 31, advancing to the Final Four. Wagner had a game-high 24 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in his eighth double-double of the season. Wagner was the first player to score at least 20 points and 15 rebounds in a national semifinal game since Hakeel Olajuwon 1983. Michigan defeated Villanova 62-79 in the National Championship Game on April 2, defeating them (#2 Coaches Poll/#2 AP Poll). Wagner earned a spot in the Final Four All-Tournament Team with 16 points and seven rebounds. He averaged 15.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.2 steals in the tournament, with 38.5% on his three-point shots.

Wagner had 14.6 points and 7.1 rebounds, shot 52.8 percent overall, and a team-best 39.4% on his three-point shots for the season. Wagner was named as an Academic All-Big Ten honoree on March 21, a former All-Big Ten honoree. Wagner revealed on April 14, 2018 that he would draft the 2018 NBA draft and select an agent. Wagner signed Joe Branch of Roc Nation, who has also represented former Michigan teammate Caris LeVert. He was invited to the NBA Draft Combine later that day.

Professional career

Wagner was selected with the Los Angeles Lakers' 25th overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft on June 21, 2018. He signed his rookie scale with the Lakers on July 1, 2007. In the Las Vegas Summer League, Wagner sustained both his left knee and left ankle. Due to his knee injury, he was unable to participate in training camp and the preseason. On October 26, Wagner was assigned to the South Bay Lakers on a rehabilitation program. Wagner made his G-League debut for the South Bay Lakers on November 3, scoring 17 points in 29 minutes in a 108-106 loss to the Stockton Kings. On November 17, the Orlando Magic made his NBA debut against the Orlando Magic. Wagner earned his first NBA points (two free throws) and finished the game with ten points on December 2 in a 120–96 victory over the Phoenix Suns. In his first career appearance against the Boston Celtics, Wagner scored six rebounds, three assists, and a block on March 9, 2019.

Wagner and Isaac Bonga, Jemerrio Jones, and a 2022 second-round pick were traded to the Washington Wizards on July 6, 2019, a three-team trade in which the Lakers acquired Anthony Davis. Wagner was the first NBA player to score 30 points and gain 15 rebounds coming off the bench since Yao Ming in 2002, and the first to play in under 26 minutes since Len Chappell in 1967. Wagner was also charged with three criminal charges in the game, making him the first NBA player to ever post 30 points and 15 rebounds (both career highs) with four three-point shots off the bench. Before returning to action against the Golden State Warriors on February 3, Wagner missed 24 games with an ankle sprain. He was named in the Rising Stars Challenge in 2020, where he scored 16 points for the world team.

In a three-team trade involving the Chicago Bulls, Wagner was traded to the Boston Celtics on March 25, 2021. Wagner won in 122–114 over the Milwaukee Bucks on March 26, making him his first appearance for the Celtics in a 122-114 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. He had three points and five rebounds in ten minutes of play. He was waived by the Celtics on April 16, according to the Celtics.

On April 27, 2021, Wagner signed with the Orlando Magic for the remainder of the 2020-21 NBA season. In a 109-104 victory, Wagner debuted for the Magic against the Cleveland Cavaliers on April 28. Wagner had two points, grabbed two rebounds, and disseyed an assist across nine minutes. In his third game with the Magic, he scored a season-high 24 points on May 1. Wagner shutting down a 3-pointer that tied the game at 109 with 1 minute and 16 seconds left to play, contributing to the Magic's 112–111 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. Franz was drafted in the 2021 NBA draft, and the Magic drafted him on August 3. On August 23, Mo Wagner re-signed with Orlando.

National team career

Wagner earned gold with the Germany U18 national team in Bulgaria at the 2014 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship Division B. Wagner, Germany's top scorer at the 2017 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship, averaging 16.1 points per contest.

Wagner helped Germany qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Split, Croatia, where he was named MVP of the Olympic qualifying tournament. He averaged 11 points per game during the Tokyo game.
