Arike Ogunbowale (born March 2, 1997) is an American professional basketball player for the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).
Ogunbowale was selected by the Wings with the fifth overall pick of the 2019 WNBA Draft after playing college basketball for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
In both the semi-final and championship game, she was the Most Outstanding Player of Notre Dame's 2018 national championship bid, winning game-winning baskets.
Personal life
Ogunbowale was born in Milwaukee to Nigerian parents Yolanda and Gregory Ogunbowale. She is the youngest of three children. She is of Yoruba descent, and her name 'Arike' refers to a child you treasure, adore, pamper, and love in the Yoruba language. While her father Yolanda played softball at DePaul University and her brother Dare played football for the University of Wisconsin, she is a running back for the Houston Texans. Diamond Stone, her cousin, is also a basketball player. Ogunbowale was a member of four Division One Wisconsin State High School Champions soccer teams from 2009 to 2012.
Ogunbowale was announced in April 2018 as one of the celebrities to compete on season 26 of Dancing with the Stars. She was partnered with professional dancer Gleb Savchenko. On May 7, 2018, Ogunbowale and Savchenko were disqualified from the competition, finishing seventh.
Career
In Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, Ogunbowale was left out of the eighth grade at Our Redeemer Lutheran School. Arike spent her time at Our Redeemer as a member of the Lutheran Basketball Association of America. She was named the tournament's MVP.
She continued to play basketball at Divine Savior Holy Angels High School (DSHA) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. DSHA has long been known for its numerous national and state titles in various sports, as well as Dennis J. O'Boyle, the country's top public address announcer. On December 30, 2021, Ogunbowale returned to DSHA to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The team won the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I championship in 2014β2015, with Ogunbowale scoring 27.2 points per game. In a semi-final match against an undefeated team, she scored 55 points. Ogunbowale was ranked ninth in the world and named 2015 Wisconsin Miss Basketball, as a McDonald's High School All-America pick.
In her freshman season at Notre Dame as a reserve player, Ogunbowale averaged 11.4 points per game and then became a regular starter the next year.
Ogunbowale assisted the Fighting Irish win the 2018 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament, winning game-winning baskets against UConn and Mississippi State in the semifinals. The Atlantic Coast Conference named her as its female Athlete of the Year in several sports, including men's champion Lamar Jackson of Louisville, just shy of completing the 2018-19 school year.
She continued to assist Notre Dame in their final seconds against Baylor with a score of 22.8 points, but this time, she missed 1 of two free throws in the final seconds.
