Mitchell Robinson Career

High school career

Mitchell Robinson attended Pine Forest High School in Pensacola, Florida, for the first two years of his high school career, briefly transferring to Landry-Walker College and Career Preparatory High School in New Orleans as a sophomore, for whom he never participated. He did appear for Pine Forest as a freshman and sophomore, but it didn't make a difference because he was still relatively new to basketball, starting in eighth grade, when he went from 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m) to 7 ft 0 in (2.13 m). He appeared in the summer league for the first time before coming to Chalmette High School in junior.

Robinson, a junior, helped the Owls win their first state playoff appearance in 19 years, and in the second round, they lost their first seed and eventual state champion Natchitoches Central High School, their first playoff game before falling out, their first playoff game until the state final. He played 20.9 points, 13.6 rebounds, 8.1 blocks, and 2 steals per game. He praised the all-district, all-Metro, and all-State teams for his service. Robinson joined Nike Pro Skills on the AAU circuit for the summer, winning individual awards in the Nike EYBL and leading Pro Skills to the season-end Peach Jam. His recruiting success soared, and he received his fifth star. Robinson averaged 15.5 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 4.1 blocks per game against the country's best players, being named to the All-EYBL second team.

Robinson averaged 25.7 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 6 blocked shots per outing as a senior at Chalmette, as well as USA Today's All-Metro Player of the Year and First Team All-America honors and recognition as the parish's first team member and the first-Metro Player of the Year award, as well as the St. Bernard Post Male Athlete of the Year. Chalmette's first district championship in 20 years in the state's toughest basketball district, as well as the state semifinals for the first time in 32 years. Robinson averaged 34.5 points, 13.5 rebounds, and 7.8 blocks in the Owls' 4 game state playoff run. Robinson was the first Chalmette basketball player to be named a McDonald's All-American, and he also appeared in the Jordan Brand Classic and the LHSBCA All-Star tournament.

Robinson tallied 14 points, three rebounds, and two blocked shots in the 2017 McDonald's All-American Boys Game. He scored 15 points in 17 minutes of play, but three rebounds were missing.

Robinson intended to play college basketball at Texas A&M but then decided to go with coach Rick Stansbury to Western Kentucky. Stansbury had recruited Robinson as the Aggies' assistant coach. "May go down as the biggest recruiting coup in WKU basketball history," basketball writer Jason Frakes wrote in February 2017.

College career

Robinson had been enrolled at Western Kentucky University for the summer semester in July 2017 and spent two weeks with the team before embarking on Costa Rica as a team. He had left campus and his room had been sanitized, according to the previous reports, and he had gone to college. He was then banned indefinitely for breaching the team's rules. Since speaking with head coach Rick Stansbury, he was granted a release to transfer, but barring an unexpected decision by the NCAA, he would have to miss the 2017-18 season.

Robinson travelled to Louisiana State University, University of Kansas, and the University of New Orleans in August 2017, in the hopes that a waiver would be given by the NCAA. Robinson returned to Western Kentucky on August 27, less than a month after being banned from campus.

Robinson announced on September 18 that he did not enroll in college and prepare for the 2018 NBA draft on his own initiative. He would not be the first recruited draft pick to play for a single year, professional, or high school/postgraduate team before entering an NBA draft, but he would also be credited as coming out of Western Kentucky by the NBA. In addition,, due to his brief time attending summer classes in Western Kentucky, he was effectively barred from participating in the NBA G League later this season due to G League rules. The decision also affected a few others who were in difficult situations at the time, such as Billy Preston and De'Anthony Melton. The news prompted at least one person to prepare by themselves for a year before deciding against going to college in order to play in the NBA G League, but the only league where winning does not matter.

Robinson was selected one of 69 players to play in the NBA Draft Combine. Robinson, on the day of the festival, withdrew from all combine performances.

Professional career

Robinson was selected as the 36th overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft by the New York Knicks on June 21, 2018. He signed a multi-year, rookie scale deal with the Knicks on July 8, 2018, after playing for the Knicks in the 2018 NBA Summer League, where he set summer league records for blocked shots and offensive rebounds. Robinson would make his professional debut on October 17, scoring two points in a 127–106 victory over the Atlanta Hawks after struggling with an ankle injury during the preseason. In a 128–100 loss to the Golden State Warriors on October 26, Robinson got off to a good start on October 26, scoring seven points and six rebounds in 29 minutes of action. In a 118-106 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, Robinson had his first double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds, as well as three assists and three steals. In a 115–89 loss to the Orlando Magic, Robinson set the Knicks' rookie record of nine blocks. Robinson's career ended on March 28, 2019, with a 117–92 loss to the Toronto Raptors, marking his first Knicks rookie since Willis Reed in 1965 to shoot 19 points and 21 rebounds in a game. In a 96-86 victory over the Chicago Bulls, he had eight points and 17 rebounds on April 9. Robinson finished second in blocked shots per game in the NBA, only behind Myles Turner of the Indiana Pacers, and was named to the All-Rookie Second Team.

In a 143-120 victory over the Hawks on December 17, 2019, Robinson scored a career-high 22 points and 13 rebounds. Robinson scored 22 points on perfect 11-of-11 shooting from the field against the Portland Trail Blazers on January 1, 2020. In a 108-101 loss to the Charlotte Hornets on February 26, Robinson had a double-double with 12 points and a season-high 16 rebounds. Robinson set a new NBA record for the highest field goal percentage in a single season as the 2019-20 season ended.

Robinson fractured his right hand during the second quarter and did not return after halftime on February 12, 2021, during the Knicks' match against the Washington Wizards.

Robinson re-signed with the Knicks on July 12, 2022, a four-year deal.

National team career

Robinson was selected to the preliminary roster of the United States national under-19 team in 2017, but did not make it to the final cut for the 2017 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup.

Robinson took 7 ft 0 in (2.13 m) without shoes, 7 ft 1 in (2.16 kg), with shoes, 223 m (2.46 m) wingspan, and 9 ft 3 in (2.82 m) standing reach, at the tryout.
