Early life

Michael Martin Murphey was born in Dallas, Texas, on March 14, 1945, to Pink Lavary Murphey and Lois Murphey. Murphey's mother, Catherine Corbett Murphey, was born in the Oak Cliff neighborhood, where he grew up. Mark, his brother, is three years older. He began riding horses on his grandfather and uncle's ranches when he was 6 years old. He'll remember sleeping on his grandfather's porch under the stars, watching the older man's stories and cowboy songs years later.

These men of the land loved being around them while doing their jobs. These experiences left a lasting impression on the young boy. He discovered a passion for cowboy songs and stories in his early years. He was also an avid reader, attracted by Mark Twain and William Faulkner's books. As a youth, he loved writing poetry and loved listening to his uncle's old 78 rpm albums, particularly those of country and folk artists such as Hank Williams, Bob Wills, and Woody Guthrie.

He started as an amateur in junior high school and then as a camp advisor at a summer camp called Sky Ranch. He started performing western songs around a campfire at a Texas ranch at the age of 17. Murphey was playing in Dallas' clubs, performing country music, folk music, and rock music by the early 1960s. With his charm and charisma, he gained a following in the Dallas area, and soon formed a band.
