When working on his Gold Coast home, the singer-songwriter, 78, underwent emergency surgery after ripping skin off his left arm and injuring muscles and nerves. Ruth Madeley (pictured central) 35, a doctor who died after a study revealed that a spinal surgeon who left her with chronic pain has treated thousands of other patients. The TV actress was operated on by surgeon John Williamson (inset) because of her Spina Bifida, a birth defect that results in incomplete closing of the spine around the spinal cord during pregnancy. According to a report by Salford Royal Infirmary, 72 patients of Williamson's whose cases should be returned should be recalled, and it found that his'surgical technique was considered to be ineffective in several instances.' Madeley, who had her first surgery as a child, said the Williamson study was 'bittersweet,' because "patients didn't get the treatment they should have."
